This one threw me for a loop.
Cliffs:
1) Dad gets a busted water heater and incurs $5,000 worth of water damages to household.
2) Gets bill for house, boat, and two vehicles all insured with AllState and sees a $200 increase in premiums. Knew there would be a $70 increase because of claim filed (did have claim free discount).
3) 30% surcharge on policy for next three years because he is now "uninsurable" since the claim was "preventable". Been with them 20+ years and his agent says he can't do anything about it.
4) Pays $50 less than before switching to American Family because the claim doesn't show up in the big database in the sky. Disclosed up front about the water damage.
5) American Family and Dad profit because of gestapo tactics employed by AllState.
6) Son (me) is also looking for new insurance.
Moral of story - If you make a non "act of God" claim and have an awesome claim free history and excellent credit score; switch companies not now but right now.
