Allowing users to sort all forum posts by post date - rather than the latest bump

episodic

Lifer
Ok, let me start by saying a few things. I am new here. I've only been here since Feb., but I found what I felt was the coolest forums I'd ever been a member of. In the last couple of months, I've invested sometime in each of my days reading and being your customer - and importantly an anandtech patron.

Since I've been a member here I've built my first computer on my own, been buying and selling stuff with other members, and have tried to be helpful when my limited knowledge has came of use. Much of the increase of my usage however came after the discovery of one very important feature.

That feature is now missing, and I feel like the carpet has been yanked underneath me, and I know of at least 3-4 other threads filled with like minded Anandtechers.

That feature was the ability to sort by the latest post withing the forums. Just to be clear (because there was some confusion in one thread), the feature allowed you to enter any forum (for example Off Topic) and read the latest posts as you entered. The latest posts would ALWAYS be first, not the ones that people bumped to the top.

This would allow you to check the forums a few times every day, every other day, whatever and see each and every post in the order they were submitted! What wonders it was. At an instant you could revert back to the default way and see what was the most popular conversations.

The wonderful thing was you could always see the new thing for sale - whether or not it recieved bumps. You could always read the latest bit of news in Politics - even if it was unpopular and did not recieve bumps. You could always read everything new and keep up with it.

Frankly, I don't see how you could be a 'regular' of the forums now without devoting an inordinate amount of time reading through all the bumps trying to find the new meat of the day.

Jason, in one of the threads you had replied to this issue, but I feel from the flow of the thread you though t that people where talking about sorting posts within a thread, and you mentioned a ticket may be put up to correct that in the future. I don't think you were talking about the issue I've presented here.

So in my most humblest request, I ask, I beg, that you bring back the ability for us to sort the threads so that we can keep up with the community if we choose to. I know that it was an oft overlooked feature, but I know dozens of persons including myself loved it, and cherished it.

I am not attempting to criticize you or Anand. I am only trying to make you aware that certain members, even if the minority, woefully miss a feature - and that many of us were those that make up what I thought was a strong core to your audience.

Please bring that feature back.

Respectfully,

Terry

Well stated (especially compared to some others). That sounds like a nice feature. Frankly I never knew you could sort by original post instead of replies. I imagine you had to go to your profile to change it? A button at the top of each forum to change the sort would be handy.

Yes. Originally you had to go to your profile and change it. I think this option wasn't used by many users is because they simply did not know the feature existed. Very handy feature indeed! 🙂

Jason, which thread specifically? I've read my heart out, and not sure what you are referring to. Can you at least say if it will be back or not?

Well then let's take this to the next step. Despite your claims to the contrary, these boards are significantly less navigable after the upgrade. I for the most part have avoided the other Hot Deal style boards primarily because of their lack of
"Sort By Original Post Date" option. I am much, much better at finding a thread by finding the date at which it was posted vs. the arbitrary order of the sorted by last replied.

Everyone who wants to see this feature, go to Fusetalk's Product Suggestion page and tell them what you think! If this is really a problem with the Fusetalk development, then that should be the place to go! Maybe we can get a faster reponse out of them this way.

I am the CTO of FuseTalk and I can tell you right now, we'll look at it but it might not be until we do a updater for the product. This product is MUTLILINGUAL and this change requires words to be added to that dictionary that is stored in the database. We have thousands of customers and anandtech is one of them, we are not going to hack up the code for anandtech, and not think of our other customers. This might have to wait until we do an update which could be as far off as june.

Thats like telling Microsoft look i dont like what you did in winxp, fix it now i dont care about anyone else..

Patience please.

Jason, I thought that might be the case vis-a-vis your involvement with FuseTalk. However I was not sure.

No one is asking you to hack up the code. However, you have to admit this change, on the surface, seems trivial. Obviously I know nothing of your db structure and so it must be more complicated than it at first appears. I am guessing when you speak of updating your dictionary you are talking about translating the phrase on the options page that would allow one to select the option to begin with, i.e. "Sort By Original Topic Date" would have to be translated into X number of languages.

However more than anything I think what you are trying to say is, "Even if we implement this tomorrow, we are not rolling incremental upgrades of FuseTalk to the AT Forums." Which makes sense, from a QA / reliability standpoint. Fair enough.

I think your Microsoft analogy is a bit off though.

Anyway I'll drop it now and be patient. A thought occurs to me though, you might consider doing a FAQ: Forum Changes sticky that includes issues such as this and the "No Divider Bar" Mozilla userchrome.css "fix" (I thought that was pretty clever). I believe there was similar issue to this regarding sorting posts in a thread in descending rather than ascending order as well.

The question is, why was this an option in the previous version but was removed for this version? Viewing the threads by when they were created seams like a logical "duhh"?

Not only that, but I have a new question. Why was the previous thread about this locked? Because admins didn't want to see it perpetually moved to the top???

Gee, if only there was a different sort option....

I don't know about anyone else, but that kind of thing seems like the admins have no consideration for the users whatsoever, and are showing it by locking topics like that (I understand there are multiple threads on this...a notification at the end of why you locked it for that reason would be HELPFUL). What everyone wants to know is why the feature was removed when it was present before? I don't get why it's so hard to put in when it previously existed.

Short story, we hear the request, and it'll have to wait until fusetalk puts it in the product.

I don't understand. This was in the product justa few days ago?! Why in the world would you want the most recently posted to thread you would have to look at the forums every living moment to find out about new topics posted.

so how is it that it was in the version before? was that not multilingual? did you not have other customers then? perhaps anandtech needs to find a new forum package? i still don't understand how this feature just got lost with a supposed "upgrade".

Did you see a 2000+ post thread that originatedin August 2002 come up today in the Hot Deals? That forum is totally useless now.

They ALL are because of this. And I don't buy the "can't put it in for language reasons". It EXISTED BEFORE!!!!

Can Anandtech go back to the previous version of Fusetalk or another forum software altogether?

Too many good functions have been lost and it looks like they won't return any time soon.

You people need to get over yourselves. You're acting like Anandtech and FuseTalk somehow *owe* you this.

Well I for one never used that option. I didn't use it then and I don't use it now, so I don't want to see it put back in. If you even consider putting it back in I will *demand* that Anandtech switch to a forum software of my choosing in order to placate me.

Now how childish does that sound?

Just give it time, your requests will be answered.

Kyteland, consider it the other way. What if Fusetalk just swapped-- took out the "Ordered by Newest Reply" and swapped it with "Ordered by Original Post Date." I'll agree the anger level is a little high in this thread, but imagine if what the majority of people preferred was removed... the flames would be so hot the server would melt. (Of course, most people would then see the truth, that sorting by reply date is a horrible, horrible, *horrible* way to do things and would be instantly converted to the One True Sort Order.) They *removed* functionality... made the site less functional. That is going to make the users of those functions angry. It's not even a "do it a different way" situation. It's GONE.

Anyway point is, if you don't see the problem, don't post in the thread about the problem.
