I think they'll start to care when more and more of them start going to jail. There's no reason for them to stop if there is no fear of prosecution, so they have to do something. It's like saying prosecuting murderers is not going to stop people from murdering in the future. No, it won't prevent all murder, but the threat of prosecution does make people think twice... otherwise there would be a lot of dead, bad drivers on the road. 🙂

The biggest LOLWTF is the fact the computer was setup and forgotten about, and the biggest WTF was it was running Windows 2000 Beta. This thing when we shut it down had 2000+ days of uptime. It was setup as test machine for our Win2k rollout.

The biggest LOLWTF is the fact the computer was setup and forgotten about, and the biggest WTF was it was running Windows 2000 Beta. This thing when we shut it down had 2000+ days of uptime. It was setup as test machine for our Win2k rollout.

just fyi: the groups that got busted don't hack servers. release groups have their own way of doing things with people who are willing to accommodate them on high-speed boxes -- which is what you would have read if you checked the web pages listed above. fxp groups (mostly run off vbb bulletin boards) are the ones who hacked your box. they are not the people who are being targeted right now and in a sense are much harder to find.

i've had to fix many hacked machines as a previous security admin at the university i attended. we also set up a totally unprotected honeypot, and within 4 days, it was hacked. kind of fun, actually. 🙂

It was Win2k Pro box so an ftp server was not running. ...and as for admin, we have literally thousands of servers at our location, so some box that we never use can be easily forgotten. It took us hours to actually physical locate the computer.

We had to call the F.B.I. (even though nothing important was on that computer.) and when they came made a copy of the hard drive. Later they called us back and wanted further infomation and co-operation, because they told us they had reason to believe to it was one of these release groups they were trying to catch. This was about 5-6 months ago.

Yeah, most of these groups set up sites on boxes at colos and stuff. They usually PAY for their servers, but often have someone in their group who works in the NOC or datacenter...most of them are in Europe I believe.

well, i'd bet the FBI has equal interest in finding these hackers as well, but i'm highly doubting it was a release group.

I've read maybe ten articles/stories about the busts, so this is what I think happened. Can anyone confirm/deny?

- FBI Undercover Agent Griffen makes two California Gigabit Top Sites: LAD and CHUD
- Chirayu Patel (Dact), a member of Boozers, becomes a SiteOp on LAD and CHUD which both are hosted in Fremont, CA (probably at Hurricane Electric)
- Because Patel is a member of Boozers, he got major groups (Centropy, TDA) to affil to these two topsites
- FBI collected IPs of some of the top warez/piracy providers.
- FBI was able to get Patel's address because he was stupid enough to send them some pirated DVDs via mail and gave his return address on the envelope
- Centropy leader (who supposedly goes by the IRC alias of both marvel and cartel) was busted in Indiana/Illinois. TDA leader was also busted
- Centropy is supposedly gone/done for. The Herbie release was on the server pre'd and someone modified the .nfo

A lot of people are blaming Patel because he is the guy who got everyone to afill at the two FBI topsites (which were run for a good year or so)

What's weird is that there is this series called, The Scene is a series about a fake ripping group involved in piracy. In episode 9 (the latest episode which debuted Early June), there is a mysterious IRC character named Gryffin and when the character is mentioned, the music in the background goes, "He works for the FBI."
