All you people who've taken the A+ exam.

What exactly does it certify that you know how to do? It seems to be a certificate in being able able to assemble an out of date PC (of course I've enver taken it). What do you have to know to be A+ certified?

Just curious why there's so much interest in this thing.

A+ is just a gateway cert that leads you to get other certs. 😀

I personally have never seen the use for the A+.

Just means that you have the ability to pass a certification.

Another letter on your resume, if you want it.

Personally, I went straight to the MCPs.

Some places won't even look at an application if it doesn't have an A+ cert on it. Most of those jobs are PC repair people. Also, it is a gateway cert. 😀

It's the marajuana of the computer world, huh?

Exactly. It seems harmless enough, but it has some adverse side-effects.

Is it hard? I've worked in a computer store for several years repairing PCs. I know enough to fix most problems on PCs that came into the store (i.e. no power, virus, dead hardware, crashy mobo, burned memory, blue screens, random reboots...etc). And I know most functions in 95/98/ME and 2K/XP plus basic networking.

It's quite easy. There are some things you need to memorize, but it shouldn't take very much studying. I'm a fan of the exam cram books. 🙂

I've never actually taken the CompTIA A+ exam, but I might have to. A LOT of jobs in SoCal require A+ certification. Apparently 2+ years experience pails in comparison to the almighty A+ (bastards :|)

A+ basically says that you're the equivalent of a newb compared to half the people on these forums

It's not worth the $200, IMO, unless you're actually getting a job that requires it... Then again, if a job requires it, plan on doing repetitive repair work for a while.

uninformed human resource people like to see it on a resume.

I bet 75% of the people here can pass it if given a week to memorize things, because the rest is already known to them. Ask this question on a forum filled with less PC enthusiasts... and you'll see that it's not a complete joke.

In the real world, it's required in some cases to get an interview. It shows you have a basic knowledge of PCs (look at objectives as linked above) and that you're not wasting their time. 99% of the time, they do not get you a job alone. I've had it since 1999 among other certs and some of them help me in everyday work activities because of some obscure things I had to memorize.

Simply put, they don't hurt... unless you don't want to spend the money.

Laser. I don't recall dot matrix printers... but the stuff you have to memorize for laser printer problems... that was a real hoot.

Yes in addition to Laser & Inkjet according to the CompTIA website.

I passed it on college on a whim without so much as cracking open a book, and I'll be the first to tell you I'm not the brightest. 🙂

And it is all out of date crap. Word is its gotten harder since I took it though (1999). But the fact that it never expires essentially makes it worthless.

It certifies that you were able to memorize the answers to a lot of practice tests. Nothing more.

Yes, I am certified in A+ as well as many other things, none of which have ever been instrumental in getting me a job.
