My cousin is 20 and was applying for the Sheriff's Dept., after graduating from a military academy. (went to get away from home, not to join the military.) She has a spotless record but was turned down by the Sheriff's Dept.

When she continued to press and ask why it came out...they found her MySpace page. Well...as it turns out she had some "racey" pictures on there (NO, address/pics WILL NOT be posted.) so they turned her down.

What you do on the internet may or may not impact your real life. Get used to it because more and more employers do internet searches on applicants, and credit checks.

Just a FYI.

Internet FTL.

Am I like the only 20 year old who hates\doesnt use myspace?

That is a very crappy reason to be denied a job though.

Thankfully mine is rather subdued. I figured Facebook & MySpace were things a hiring managers would check so I tend not to keep anything "incriminating" out in public view.

I think I posted a similar warning a year or so ago. I have seen this happen first-hand, to a person who said something on his myspace page to the effect of "I like to party all night and if I need to sleep, I'll sleep at work." No job for you.

And if you plan on "cleaning up" your pages before applying for a job, don't forget pages can be cached by search engines.

Valid point, but I doubt most employers are THAT thorough.

Yet.

nope its pretty crummy

but it is useful for finding the emo tool bags that trashed my mates house and stole lots of stuff. that really sums up the idiocy of that place. here we have 13 guys who call themselves the notorious 13, and then they go wreck houses at house parties on purpose and call it art.

they were so easy to track down it wasnt funny

No, I despise Myspace. Lab rats have a higher collective IQ than the whole of Myspace.

It didn't say anything bad, even had pictures of her in the Acacemy. Problem is she also had some lingere pictures on there...professional shoot, but still showed poor judgement to post them.

No, still no :camera:'s

I've heard of this happening before... I don't post too much stuff like that on my Facebook and/or MySpace, just a few pics out with friends. Which isn't anything crazy. But I do have all my stuff private that's viewable by friends only. And the only people I accept as friends are people I know in real life.

My sister was in a near fatal accident and the only way the family found out about it was b/c her friends found me on her myspace and messaged me and my gf to get ahold of me.

I'm 26 and i'm not ashamned of being on myspace, i use it to keep in touch with friends and family i otherwise wouldnt. I dont post stuff on there that i wouldnt post/say elsewhere.

Just realize ANYONE can see what you're up to on there as it is public domain and you wont get in trouble for it. People that bag on myspace in forums are funny IMO. Many of them post the same stuff (pics of themselves, words that could be used against them, etc) on forums too. Seems all the gripes about myspace are b/c of the tools that use it, not the people who actually use it to keep in touch and find lost friends.

*clicks 2 New Friend Requests*

"Oh, Corporate Giant wants to be my friend! I'm a vain person seeking social acceptance, so I'll accept you Mr. Corporate Giant. Hmmm Tina wants to be my friend too... wow, Tina sure looks like my friends Regina and Sally Mae."

Maybe she would've been accepted if she wasn't being a typical Myspace whore with lewd (but not nude) pictures :p.

I was coerced into getting a page this year as my friend made one for me, but really it's not as bad as all the haters make it seem.

Anyway, the best thing to do is make your profile private so potential emplyoers cannot access your page.

I have a Facebook page, but I do not want a MySpace page, though I assume it would be possible to somehow create a MySpace page that doesn't utterly suck, as many of them do.
