I'm looking for a used car, since mine was rear ended and written off. I found a car I liked, great condition, the only thing is when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd (Manual transmission) is grinds a bit. It shifts fine up and down in every other gear. It even works fine 1st to 2nd. What could be the problem? Is it a dying transmission? How much would it cost to get fixed? HELP!! Thanx.

Probably just worn synchro gears. Should run alright for a while. Depending on the make, shouldn't cost too much to fix...I had the problem in my car, but never really worried about after a snapped the input shaft on the gear box :)

It is an 1986 Toyoya Celica GT-S, and I am a pizza delivery driver, so I drive alot. Could you give me a rough estimate on how much it would cost?

I'm in Aussie land, so I got no idea on your type of car there. I know for mine, it would have cost me about 75-100 US dollars, but that an older gearbox mated to a big thumping V8. Your car is 'slightly' different :)

Ring a mechanic up otherwise, for a rough estimate...

If you learn to match rpm's when shifting, you wont even need a repair.
When you go to downshift next time, while the clutch is down tap the gas and let the rpm's shoot up. Then try and slide the shifter into 2nd. You'll notice at a certian rpm it just slides right in. That rpm will always be the same at the same speed (eg at 20mph its always 2500rpm). It does vary with speed, but in a few weeks you'll have gotten a real good feel of the relation ship between speed and rpm for that gear, and you should be able to match it almost subconciously.

A fun, kick ass delivery car, but no room in the back seat. Nice and quick in traffic:). Should be pretty dependable, too. It has a hydraulic clutch, which may be leaking. Make sure the fluid is full. The slave cylinder is cheap to rebuild. Any good parts store will have a rebuild kit for < $20 (US, I don't know Cdn.) The master is a bit more complicated/expensive, but should be affordable, even if you have someone else do to work.

My '89 Celica acted like that until I fixed the slave cylinder. That car's dead now, but that's another story.

You might try changing the tranny fluid, but it might not help much. At least make sure the level is OK.

Learn how to double clutch and heel and toe while rev matching as B. Bart suggested. It takes practice to get it right, but it's fun, like a little downshift dance. It saves a lot of synchro and clutch wear. I start doing this a few years ago, and now I do it without a thought.

I'd love to help you out with parts, as I happen to have an '86 and an '89 lying around, but I live like 1½-2 days away from you.

Good luck, Pizza Drivin' Brother. :)

Thanks Garfang, this car would be a real improvement over my hugely powerful '83 Prelude (A whole 98 HP).

Johnny, Pizza Delivery is better than a real job. I sit around and do whatever I want, take a delivery, average about $10CDN an hour (minimum wage here is $7.65). And get to listen to music and drive. Best job ever!!

Damn right, YJase! JohnnyKnoxville, I probably average $12-14 per hour, and nights when I bring home $120 cash aren't uncommon, and that's not even close to my best night of $180. That's on top of a small pay check twice a month. Beats the hell out of temping in an office, which I've also done.

I'm only 18, if I decide to get a "real job" (when I'm married and have kids) I'll still do this at night!!

I'm a bit older, but I've barely gotten started in school. I took programming at a local tech school for about 1½ years. My GPA was about 3.9 (I got one B cause I left a few programming assignments 'til the last minute). I learned a lot about computers and I also learned that I don't want to sit on my ass 8-12 hours working for somebody else to make their PO system truncate pennies instead of rounding them and other dumbass requests to help a big corporate bottom line. I'll be working for all I'm worth this summer so I can go to the University of Minnesota, and get a real engineering degree. I hope to work for myself and set my own hours. In the mean time, delivery driving is the uber student job.

What would be the cause of upshifting problem? My 94 Mercury Sable does that whenever shifting from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 .. ???
Help me, too ...
