polar bears only live in the north pole region, while penguins are in the south pole region.

what's the deal with tv shows and commercial (coke anyone?) showing both animals in the same place?

Our middle school has a trivia contest every day; the winners (selected at random from all the winning entries) get ice cream cones with their lunch. I regularly submit questions to the contest. One of the best questions was "How many penguins does the typical polar bear eat in a year?" One of the better questions, because it made the kids think. Quite a few got it correct though.

As a point of trivia, this was the important fact in an Encyclopedia Brown case. A man who had made several Arctic expeditions had died, and his house was opened to friends/well-wishers and those who wanted to preview his soon-to-be auctioned belongings. Some money and/or jewelry was stolen, but everyone leaving was searched thoroughly. The thief had brought in stuffed penguins as gifts, hidden the valuables in them, arranged them around a polar bear, and planned to buy them back at auction.

They probably do it because both are polar animals, and they all get lumped together for the sake of keeping ratings up. That way you can attract penguin fans as well as polar bear fans.
