All this new Media Center stuff with PS3 and XBOX 360

Is almost inviting more movie piracy, and probably making people do the very thing movie studios don't want people doing, ie rip movies to their computers.

Same goes for music, the RIAA thinks copying a CD to your computer is piracy. But if you want to use the PS3 to play them, you have to rip them to your computer.

i tried this out yesterday and Media Center sucks ass and wont let me play 98% of the media on my xbox360 through MC Extender because it does not have the correct codec, hell it wont even play in MC on the comp

vids work fine opening normally in WMP or whatever

idea is fail

I don't think the MPAA cares if you rip videos to your computer, they just don't want you to share those videos with anyone. That's why a lot of newer movies come with a DRMed computer version of the movie - no ripping needed.

You need to download the codecs from Xbox Live. See if you can find a friend with an account or sometimes a game will come with a 48 hour trial.

Not sure what codecs you're having a problem with, the Xbox 360 supports Divx and Xvid. Instead of Media Center you could use TVersity, it'll transcode unsupported files for you on the fly.

Edit: According to this: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007...-include-media-center/ Divx support doesn't work with Media Center Extender. It does work with the uPnP media player.

You don't need a 48 hour trial. Just setup a Live Silver Account which is free.

DON'T use the Media Center. Like you said, it sucks ass. Instead go to My Xbox -> Videos in the dash. You'll be asked to download an update that will allow you to play WMV, Divx, Xvid, MP4, and h.264 (2-channel audio only) through the dashboard instead of through Media Center.

You also have to setup your Windows Media Player to share the videos. link

With Media Player 11, you can share video, music, and photos with an Xbox 360 console on the network by using the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. This service replaces Windows Media Connect.

To set up Media Player 11 to share files with your Xbox 360 console, follow these steps:

1. Download and then install Media Player 11. To do this, visit the following Xbox Web site:
http://www.xbox.com/PCSetup (http://www.xbox.com/PCSetup)
2. Start Media Player 11, click Library, and then click Media Sharing.
3. Click to select the Share my media to check box, select your Xbox 360 from the list, and then click Allow.

See my edit (and Queasy's post). Don't use MCE.

ive done all that you listed and added nearly every file i can to the lib, shill shows up opn the xbox as no files listed

only way i see stuff is in MCE and i cant play anything

to clairify i actually did see files the way you described at one point yesterday, i changed nothing and it no longer works

the xbox also does not see any of the other comps on my network just 1 even tho all have sharing enables and stuff in WMP 11 lib

Try using TVersity.

Anubis, you've got something else going on. I've never had a problem with setting up my 360s to list the video off of my PC in the dash.

My xbox 360 plays everything except mkv files without issue.....

I stream it from a windows home server box.

IMHO, modded xbox(original) is still king of media consoles.... $50 for the console + <100 for a 500 Gb HDD = all most people need.

Unfortunately, the original Xbox is starting to lack on the power necessary to play the latest codecs. My original Xbox was choking on an Xvid file recently.

The 360 is actually very good with the Netflix streaming added to it. Should get even better as Netflix keeps adding to its Watch Instantly library.

I think all of this is way too advanced for the average user. I doubt an average user can set up their computer to act as a media center using WMP 11, and then configure their XBOX 360 or PS3.

BTW, how is the performance using wireless G? I was using wireless B, and it was horrible.

FWIW I can't tell a difference between wireless G on my PS3 and a wired connection on the PS3 or xbox360.
