Like the guy who committed the Virginia Tech. massacre for instance. In some cases, there are reports that these people were otherwise normal and well behaved as kids (I might be wrong here, as there are probably conflicting reports).

As a society, in some instances, we sort of promote being tough. We ask people to toughen up. We ridicule others to make them stronger. On an average, there isn't much tolerance for people who behave differently from what's considered to be the norm. Maybe, just maybe, in some cases, someone snaps. I mean there is so much in this world that can make you hate people. Of course, there are also lots of wonderful things in life and about people. But when you're stuck in a horrible situation in life, when you are deprived of basic amenities and/or love from others, it's not hard to imagine a person becoming hateful (it is possible that neuro-psychiatric abnormalities are a factor in some cases, but it's easy to throw around the term 'mental illness' without understanding the situation and the individual in a thorough and objective manner or even the nature of the neuro-psychiatric abnormality).

When shit happens to others, we ask them to 'just deal with it'. But when we go through horrible stuff, we end up making a ruckus.

*I am in no way condoning what these people did.* But maybe, do you think we need to look at how we behave as a society and how we treat our fellow human beings ?

Certainly.

My guess is most of these guys doing this either had poor childhoods--not necessarily abusive, but something clearly lacking--or they have significant metal disorders that even the best of parents cannot hope to confront without better professional help.

The thing is, even if a person has a neuro-psychiatric abnormality/disease (I dislike the term 'mental illness' as it is an archaic/inaccurate term), sometimes the best therapy isn't of much use. Neuroscience and pharmacology haven't come to the stage where everything can be treated effectively. In some instances, people gain great relief from therapy and in some instances they hardly gain anything. Some people think, therapy is the answer to it all. But this just isn't true.

Not to be a racist, but why is it that virtually all the shooters, bombers, etc. are white? If you look at the prison criminal population there should be others, besides whites. What is going on?
