How lovely that after all your condescending BS you all spouted (you know who you are) there is a x1950 AGP hitting the market. And in your wisdom, your pronouncements were OVER A YEAR AGO.

You must be so proud!

lol.. you actually think any of those people are actually gonna admit anything?

There are no others. And the 1900 is an old card... the AGP version just comes out now after how long it has been out?

By dead they did not mean no more AGP cards they meant almost gone as they would have not been all gone in 1 day.

well, except that it doesn't cost 2x the pci-e version, and then there's the upcoming dx10 agp cards from nvidia which they will be releasing soon... other than that, everything you said is true. oh wait, you didn't say anything else...

I have an AGP and I won't buy another AGP card not because it sucks, is because I'm pretty much in the dead end of an upgrade, which videocard can offer me 200% better performance without spending the double amount of money than upgrading to the same card on the PCI-E? Now even though GeCube will release an Radeon X1950XT (Nice thing), I think that AGP still have plenty of users around, but most of them are not enthusiast cause enthusiast buys newer hardware, but the others wouldn't spend more than $250 on a card, that's why we don't see much high end hardware at all because the biggest earnings comes from mainstream to low end hardware, not high end. I guess that most of the complaints of AGP users to have high end is because like me, we bought high end hardware on the platform almost when PCI-E debuted (Some time ago) and their systems have the potential for a new high end card upgrade, though my CPU will be a bottleneck for a Radeon X1950XT, better spend the same amount of money on the PCI-E platform and have better performance. Even though there's no card that can bottleneck an AGP bus because most programmers doesn't use the command to use system memory to map textures on it.

well, for me, having to upgrade 4 other pc's sometimes agp just makes sense. while my main pc stays up to date, i do have to make some sacrifices by only keeping the others "fairly updated".. plus an agp upgrade is much simpler and less time consuming. i'm sure i'm not the only pleased there are decent agp cards available. $200 for a card with the performance of the x1950pro is pretty decent, especially on (what was 2 years ago) a high-end 939 system. it ain't no c2d by a long shot, but it plays everything pretty well.

it's not always about whether one is an "enthusiast" or not, it's just about whether it makes sense in a particular situation. there's certainly nothing wrong in that.

Regardless of how I personally feel about upgrading an AGP rig, the fact that the option is still there is good IMO. I honestly could see how someone with a decent Northy and on a budget might want to pair it up with an X1950Pro for a lot less than building a new rig.

I am looking to upgrade my VESA Local Bus card ... are these PCI cards all they are cracked up to be ? This AGP stuff ... too new for my tastes. I'd prefer to wait a few more years til they get the bugs worked out. Tseng Labs ET4000 FTW !!! Cirrus Logic rawks my socks too !!

And if they game it would be a waste of time because they could dump their Northy combo in Ebay and pick up a 3000+/DFI Lanparty Ultra-D combo for around the price they sold their northy combo on ebay for (Add $50 max).

Then they get to choose from the whole gamut of PCI-e cards, get faster CPU performance than virtually any Northwood (Extreme Editions aside, perhaps), and can keep their old RAM and whatnot.

What?

Get a PCIe mobo. Spending money on a AGP mobo (new/good at least $80) now is simply a waste of money. Why spend $80 for something that will last a few months vs. $120 for something that could last at least two years?

FWIW I'm in the middle of testing my P4 3.2E - AGP X1950PRO rig on several benchmarks looking for CPU bottlenecks.

I'm varying CPU speed from 2.8 to 3.6, rez from 10X7 to 12X10. & settings 0XAA trillinear to 4XAA 16XAF on 3DM03-05-07. HL lost coast & F.E.A.R.

Hopefully this will help some folks make the right decision for them.

Take it for what its worth, but THG did a very comprehensive AGP vs. PCI-E round-up on an older system (Barton 2500+) and found the CPU does tend to be the bottleneck with faster cards.

AGP and even DDR might have survived longer and performed similarly, but the MB and CPU industry simply stopped providing upgrade paths for them. Even if they can perform comparably with the same CPU/GPU, they're dead options because the faster CPUs and GPUs simply won't support them.

I recently made the platform switch and I don't regret it. Sure, it hurts a bit more in the wallet, but the number of options and money saved going forward outweighs the limited options and premium for improved performance from future AGP/DDR parts.

I'd love to see that!

i was really really really really really really tempted to upgrade to e4300 and pci e 7900ko , but i was able to resist .

I can still enjoy Serious sam 2 and Fear. 🙂 but... not... COH! doh >_<

well i DO 😛
:lips:

i am quite proud - as one of the so-called *know-it-alls* here - to have BUCKED your 'trend' and quite firmly stated - over a year ago that the manufacturers were STUPID for not providing an AGP video card upgrade path ... i said *demand* would prove them wrong ...

--and as it turned out, i was right and they were forced to release [now] midrange Video cards - including the evidently soon-to-be-released x1950xt in AGP
in every *single* similar thread i "supported AGP" as a viable alternative upgrade path and even bought a AGP x1950p/512M to replace my x850xt

that said, i might have to stick my x1950p back in my rig if i can't sell it and buy a better PS when i send my 7800GS back for 'credit' 😛

--and next year i am upgrading my rig entirely to PCIe[2]
why?

because AGP IS dead

AGP is not dead. That said, it will never have very good CPU support going forward. I think that there are a few people with AGP Opteron rigs and stuff, but they are few and far between.

I expect some midrange DX10 cards to support it, but in another year or so it will be officially *dead*.

PCI-E does seem like a useless upgrade tho. It doesn't really offer anything that AGP didn't. They could have just added a 2nd AGP slot for SLI.

that isn't as silly as it sounds....IIRC while they didn't add a second AGP slot, ATI created a special bridge chip that allowed two AGP GPU's to work on one PCB...it worked well although the GPU they used sucked donkey's balls and the result was a below average video card (Rage Fury MAXX) but it showed that two common AGP GPU's could work together.

All that would be needed for AGP SLI would be a variation of this Bridge chip to allow either the second AGP slot to be slaved of the first (effectivily making 2x AGP 4x slot instead of 1x 8x AGP) or to dupilcate the functions of the AGP bus to allow two 8X AGP slots.

but thats just a theory, nothing more.

I have a PCIe rig, just saying that people having options is good.

AGP is dead!

Just because you can buy a midrange card for AGP still, doesnt mean you're not wasting your money on a dead end platform.

When the best AGP card you can get is a X1950Pro or a 7900GS I'd hardly say AGP was alive and kicking.

EDIT: FYI, the same X1950Pro but in PCI-E form is $70 cheaper than its AGP brother. Good move sticking with AGP.

Not only are you stuck with the same CPU, motherboard and RAM with no upgrade options, but you also have to pay $70 more for the same GPU which offers even less performance than the PCI-E version.

Makes PERFECT sense to me.

yeah, he sure is stickin' it to the man

Wow, so you guys have some pretty serious english language comprehension problems, eh? Allow me to clarify.

Things I didn't say:

1. Everybody should run out and buy an AGP part
2. AGP rulez!
3. PCIe upgraders are idiots who should be flogged.

The ONE thing I did say:

Folks who "guaranteed" there would never be an AGP card higher than an X850 were flippin wrong.

Oh, and, nyah nyah nyah!

Can we get this guy banned?

Doesnt someone have an ignore script that I can borrow? I remember someone saying they had an ignore script that they used on Rollo and Crusader I think. Or was that just a joke?

hahaha

I had that card. Vesa Local Bus FTW!!

The retailers are gouging people for those new AGP cards too because they know you don't have a choice besides a new system or a huge upgrade.

And I haven't seen an 8800 series AGP card yet although I'm sure they will be out eventually and you will have to pay extra for the AGP version so w00t for you, lol. 😛

Just please stop being such a drama queen. Who cares if somebody said AGP was dead? It's really not worth getting worked up about. 😉

OK, let me take a stab at this. Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Here's the most likely scenario that I can think of:

It's the fall of 2005. Mommy and Daddy decide to buy you a computer after months of begging.

They let you decide what computer you want and you ignorantly opt for an AGP rig because you didnt do your research.

Over a year pass and you finally realize that your system isnt fast enough to play the games you want. But wait, you remember reading the thread in the OP saying how there would be no more AGP video cards. DANG! Now what are you going to do?

So you ask mommy and daddy for a new computer but they say no and now you have a problem. You're going to have to pay for it yourself! So you jump on the computer and amazingly you find that you can get a sup3r l337 X1950Pro AGP! ZOMG!

Now you go back to mommy and daddy and tell them that instead of buying a new $3000 Dell, they only have to pay $300 for an X1950Pro and you'll stop bugging them.

They agree. Mission accomplished. In your face Anandtech!

The End.

How close was I?
