Some Sony stuff is quite good, particularly their televisions.

Trinitrons were pretty much the gold standard in CRT technology, whether it was PC monitors (G520/FW900 and derivatives) or televisions (Wega CRT's).

Their SXRD sets are also very highly regarded.

I wouldn't touch any of their low end stuff, save for a few headphone models that are a pretty decent value.

I did a ton of research when I bought my HDTV a few years ago, and the XBR Trinitron had the best picture quality I could afford. I'm still happy with the purchase.

But, after going through three PS2's in 5 years, I'm reluctant to buy more Sony stuff.

I only wish I could afford to buy Sony and Bose. 🙁

And Monster.

Sony actually has products that are worth owning for the money (if you have that kind fo money), whereas Bose and Monster are effectively marketing companies with products that sell because of the marketing. their products are not worth owning. Monster, well if you wanna waste money go ahead, it's no so bad because it's not like they are passing off mediocre products as excellent. they at least have good cables. you are just paying 4x what you should for said cables. bose isn't doing that, they are selling crap products. well.. we'll let yoyo handle that 😉

i'd buy sony if I had the money. sony televisions are almost always the best consumer televisions, ESPECIALLY the SXRD line. mmm i dream in SXRD 🙂
as someone else mentioned, yes stay away from the sound division of Sony. but the video, that's where its at.

Sony's ES receivers are good stuff, but otherwise most of what they make is crap

Not sure about newer generations but their ones from a couple years ago had very poor stated vs real power output.

..I've had tons of sony product over the years and usually end up giving them away to make room for yet another sony. I gave away a 28" crt xbr and a 25"crt xbr to get a 40" sony Bravia. And may get the 46" bravia for another room. I get all my electronics at costo so there's no risk.

They've had some major screw-ups, but they are a MAJOR company with many divisions and many, many products. If they were all bad, they wouldn't be a major company. For high end video, I've been reading there is NOTHING BUT Sony (movie production stuff). They have some fantastic digital cameras -- I sold my F717 on here last year, and that thing was terrific. They've now made a splash in the DSLR world to some acclaim, though people are waiting for their next move to see where they are going. When I upgrade my LCD, it's either a Sony Bravia or another Sharp Aquos.

I just dropped $350 on a Sony external flash for my DSLR, but I get it back with Sony points from my Visa card which I've been saving for four years now. 😉

I'm quite happy with my Sony A100 DSLR, but I suppose one could contend that it's really a Minolta.

My admittedly ancient Sony HP-610A (Note: Ebay link is NOT my auction, these were simply the only pictures I could find) receiver/turntable is still in great shape and still puts out great sound. And my father's new XBR is an amazing TV.

In fact, the only Sony product that I've ever had fail on me was a very inexpensive CD "boom box" that I used when I was working in the yard or garage and that tended to get wet a lot from me using it while washing the car.

Sony sells their TV's for about double the price of Vizio with the same specs...they rip you off. I avoid Sony like the plague.

Sony computers are nice for performance, but hilariously overpriced and laced with DRM. Their video and home entertainment products are nice though, and for the "point and click" photographer their cameras are pretty nice.

I prefer to avoid them - usually you can find comparable/better products (Canon, Samsung, Etc) at a better price, IMO. But if something's a nice deal I don't mind getting it, regardless of brand - it's just that Sony usually isn't a good deal, performance or price-wise.

I own a psp.

Wonderful wonderful hardware but bad ergonomics. Thats not so bad. Whats bad is that they have this wonderful wonderful hardware and only thing they are concerned about is securing it more and more so people really really do have to buy their bad psp games. They dont care about making the psp what it really could be, make it actually more desiriable.

I have a Sony HDTV that I love (42" RPTV). I've also considered a Sony HD digital camcorder, but mostly because it's hard to find a quality camera that has an equally quality underwater housing, especially if you don't want to spend $5K. But generally I avoid Sony when possible.

They have a lot of good products and a lot of mediocre stuff. I avoid mediocre stuff in general unless I don't want to spend much money then I just get something cheap that is 'okay' by any brand.

Sony stuff you do tend to pay a bit more but then most of the higher end stuff you get a bit extra.

But some of their stuff is ridiculously over priced for some obscene reason!

..costco has the vizio lcd next to the Bravia and with similar settings the Bravia blows the vizio away. the vizio is like viewing video thru the fog.
