all s939 can run single channel?

can all s939 boards run single channel, or does ram have to always be dual channel (only 2 or 4 sticks)?

You can certainly run single channel, but some boards do have trouble booting with three memory modules under any circumstances.

Read your manual closely to check which DIMM to install first. I know on the A8N its the third one from the CPU, but for others I couldn't say.

Any S939 board should run perfectly in single channel.... you'll see roughly a 5% performance hit in most instances so it's not too bad. Whether you can utilize 3 DIMM's depends on the board in question, some will handle it, whereas others won't. If you do use 3 DIMM's it'll be forced to run in single channel though.
You'll need 2 or 4 DIMM's for DualChannel operation.
