When running my caviar 1.5GB HD the computer takes a while to start up and recognize the HDD and when it trys to boot from it, it's very slow and never does. I've just hooked the drive up to my USB 2.0 drive enclousure and was able to have windows detect the drive enclosure and the drive but there is no drive letter associated with the drive. The drive also can't be found in Computer Management (Admin tools).

connect the drive after windows has reached desktop otherwise if connected at startup the system will try to boot from it.

Check device manager and see if your USB 2.0 controller has a driver installed for it. It should be under USB controllers -> USB 2.0 HUB. Ensure it's not listed as other device "?"

Does any other USB 2.0 device get detected in the OS?

Yes other USB 2.0 devices are detected, infact I was able to hook up 2 prior drives with this enclosure and worked perfectly. Maybe I should be thinking more of on a separate machine, so I hook up the HDD to the computer, it's slow to detect it but it does and then doesn't really boot from it (get message OS Loading) but nothing. Then I tried the usb 2.0 solution.
