All of a sudden, I hate the government.

I just got my first paycheck at my new job.
Total deductions for federal/state/social security/etc:
$853.46

That's for *two weeks* of pay. Taxes in principle don't bother me. I enjoy having roads and police and national defense and whatnot...

But, $1700/month? That's insane. I could buy a house with that. I guess I need to find a good accountant. There's got to be some way to get some of that back at the end of the year.

San Francisco? That'll do it.

Believe it or not, there's no city income tax. I get the same thing deducted from my paycheck as I would anywhere else in the state. And the state income tax is far lower than federal. Federal income tax is over half of that number, with the majority of the rest of it going to state income tax and SS.

Translation: I want to brag that I make a lot of money.

Fixed.

So you're making somewhere around $60k a year. Leaves you with about $3300 a month to live on. Effective tax rate of around 30-33%. Yep, you know how everyone else feels now. You've just discovered why the intelligent working class votes Republican.

You shouldn't enjoy that money being taking out for roads, you already pay a ton of tax for roads everytime you fill up.

I meant that you were located in CA, 😛. Are you having the maximum Federal withholding taken out each paycheck?

Yep, now at 60k you are one of the evil rich that you have heard so much about.

Remember when your econ professor told you that there was no such thing as a free lunch? How about your college classmates that were on financial aid and flunking out of college? Yeah.. you're fitting their bill now!

Hmm thats around what I expect to make when I graduate, or maybe a little bit more..was wondering what the paycheck would be. Does that 3300/month figure include 401k?
