The comment was meant in jest, I'm in a great mood today 🙂 However, perhaps the following observation will reflect the prudence of dealing with his friends individually instead of being intractable and potentially alienating "real" friends by failing to show the trust and faith real friends deserve and which is at the heart of any good relationship.

Well... yes and no. I trust my friends, and I love them. But, if I buy the vintage Mustang that I'm looking at, there's no way in hell anyone but me is going to drive it, other than maybe letting two people that I have in mind drive it once to see what it's like. Same thing, here. They can't respect the fact that he likes his DVD's in pristine shape, so they lose the privilage of watching them. 🙂 I'm not going to take the chance.

With a vintage 'stang that is quite understandable, but with a few DVDs I would take each friend on a case by case basis and allow them the opportunity to either prove worthy or unworthy of my continued trust. I too love my friends and would not want to cause feelings of rejection and/or show of low estimation of their character over less than a 100$ worth of movies they wished to borrow. On the 'stang I would smack their hand for touchin' it though 😉

You seem to be punishing all of your friends because of the dumb actions of a few friends. And that's your right - don't get me wrong. You might have been wiser to have ground rules for your friends... giving them some standard (e.g. - don't scratch and have it back in 3 days). This would end discussion by those who failed to play by the rules and not punish those who have not.

I concur, the guilty must be punished 😀

Yea I have freinds that I will not trust with a blank cd-r, Some people just dont have respect for other peoples stuff. Ill let some of my freinds borrow stuff, the ones that can be trusted, while not letting the others. All though i only have 1 freind that respects my stuff, all the others screw it up :|

Man I hate people like that - but its completely true. Some people just dont respect technology the way we do - realizing how delicate it can be in some aspects, and they dont realize how anal some of us are about keeping our stuff in mint condition. Dont even sweat it, LostHiway. Give him a few minutes to realize it is your stuff and youve been screwed one time too many.

I have close friends, friends, and aquaintances. For things that I value greatly, I would lend my close friends anything they wanted. I choose which friends I will be close with and for those, they only need ask and if it is within my ability, I will happily give them anything they need.

For general friends and aquaintances I usually don't lend anything unless it is something I can give away without expecting it back. This goes for property or money.

You're not a jerk. I refuse to lend out my DVDs too, they are all in pristine condition and unfortunately most people don't respect them (just go rent one from blockbuster and look underneath it).

I only have about 100 titles though...600...damn!

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'll give everyone a chance...but I'm going to explain how anal I am about keeping my DVD's in mint condition. Hopefully they'll understand

Hey, if they think you're Block Buster, then let them leave a $20 deposit for each movie. If you don't trust your friends with a simple DVD, you need different friends.

Yeah, I totally understand. I'm the same way with my swords 🙂

I agree with Skoorb. It's just a freakin' DVD. Lighten up.

My friends and I borrow them to each other all the time, along with my family.

Borrow something of theirs... and see if they will let you.

Better yet, bash the hell out of it and see if they like it 😀

I used to put model cars and aircraft together for a hobby when I was younger. I stopped when my friends would come over and play with them like they were G.I.Joe vehicles or something. I used to have some that my grandfather put together when he was a kid, and even those ended up broken. :|

although i feel LostHiway was wrong in the way he handled the situation, he has made it very clear that he values his DVD collection, and also maintains them in mint condition...so its more that just a freakin' dvd. i have a small dvd collection that i dont care much about and a big Audio CD collection, there is no way that im gonna give a friend the original CD, i always make a copy of the audio cd and give that . piece of cake especially these days with the sub 3 minute burners.
