All my fish died. :(

I hope you had cheap fish 😛

That's why I have cheap fish... It's really funny, though.. I bought 2 fish that were $12 each (expensive for me), 6 that were $0.80, and 2 that were $0.60, and 1 that was $2.25.

You can probby guess which two are dead while the rest are still living just fine..

Sorry about your fish.

Letting the nitrogen cycle complete. I think thats what hit the first batch, they essentially got poisoned.

A couple weeks is a little extreme... 😛 It'd probably be going rancid by then..

It only takes ~24-48 hours for almost all of the chlorine to leave the water.

Aside from that the tank wont stabilize until the first fish are introduced and given some time to get the cycle set up anyways if I remember correctly.

And yes I have cheap fish. I aspire to saltwater, but am "Cutting my teeth" so to speak on freshwater as its a helluva lot cheaper.

On a related note, I want to kill my fish....but they wont die.

I've got 2 fish and a koi in a 55gal tank. Little guys, all about 1-2 inches. They are scared as hell of people, spending most of their days hiding in a corner. If you walk up to them they scatter, trying to commit suicide by jumping out of the tank...hitting their heads reather hard on the lid. This happens if you even look at them sideways....but despite this paranoia (and their inability to grow beyond 2 inches)....they have lived for more than a year now. I've truly got some of the great mysteries of the fish world in my tank.

Buy fish from a reputable store, do 30% water changes every month, and don't overfeed the fishies. I've had several of my current African Cichlids since 1997. The only water additive/conditioner that I use is called "Stresscoat" and you can find it at Wal-Mart.

Seriously? If you wanna get rid of the tank and are somewhat close by lemme know.

If you want to ensure that your fish don't die from Ich, besides using the stress coat and the other medicines, keep the tank at about 80-81 degrees. The guy at the pet store told me that and my second set of fish lasted a lot longer than the first and none of them got Ich again.

Chlorine may evaporate over time, but many locals use chloramine, which stays in the water. You need a product to remove it.

ha! (not at the death, but the get new fish)
fish are the only pets that people seem ok with instantly replacing. all other animals ive heard people say "im gonna need some time"

my dad has tons of $$$ fish in his 100gallon tank...
i think the most $$ one that die was $100+

edit* it was a silver Arowana... after one died he gave the other one away to someone who had a bigger fishtank heh.

I don't think arowanas are supposed to be in 100gallon tank. heh eh what do i Know.

I started out with like 10 fish, and now I'm down to two. They aren't dying from the nitrogen cycle, they are dying because the main aggressors in the tank are biting the fins of other fish.

I have Africa cichlids and some of them are very aggressive. I'm amazed. I've heard of stories where some cichlids drew First Blood of their owners.

Dude, just fry them up in a pan and eat them, problem solved.

Ok. theres about 0 usefull information in this thread... It seems like a lot of computer geeks are clueless about fish.

If your not gonna read the below, please go to another forum for advice on fish.
For freshwater I would recommend www.aquariacentral.com to the beginner
For saltwater, definately go to www.reefcentral.com

Since I had up to about 5 tanks in the past few years, but now concentrate more on my reef tank heres some advice.
Ich can stay in the substrate of your tank and wait for new fish to arrive. If you add new fish in now, you may have the same problems.
Hopefully since you did mention the nitrogen cycle you seem like you already know what it is. Hopefully you've done all your water tests and know that your tank is safe.

For the person who said chlorine dissolives in 24 hrs, yes its true, but most munincipal tap water has chlormine added to it which will not dissipate, you need to add water conditioner still.

African cichlids aren't particularly "aggressive" in that they dont kill for food the way South Americans do. At least the common ones in fish stores. THey are territorial. If your fish are killing each other its because you have inadequate space, and/or you dont have suitable rock structure for them. I have about 25 African cichlids and they get a long great. The cichlids you hear about drawing blood are usualy Oscars which are also great fish. This are usualy 10"+ specimens however and I very much doubt you have a 10"+ African...

Finaly, higher temp can help treat ich as the life cycle of the bacteria dies faster etc etc... Normaly though your fish only get ich because they are stressed not healthy. Same as humans. Its usualy in the water, but its not until something else makes them not healthy that it gets to infect and spread.

Get Kribensis.

African fresh water fish. Very pretty fish. Get a male and two females you'll be breeding in no time. Very very interesting fish. I've had them for the last 3 years. I can't get rid of them. They never effing die!

1)Use Seachem Prime as your declorinator, everything else sucks.

2)DO NOT use a underground filter, use a powerfilter. Aquaclear's WITHOUT the carbon and only the foam inserts.

3)DO NOT use any extra "Treats your Ph, removes Nitrates etc" its ALL CRAP. If you want a low Ph use R/O water, if you want a high Ph add some crushed coral into your filter.

4)Fish Food does matter, I only use Hikari and Hikari(sp?) Frozen Foods.

I have or "HAD" 1 65-Gallon, 1 35-Gallon, 1 20-Gallon and 2 10 Gallons. So, you get the idea...
