I went to job corps 10 years ago when I was 20, it was a pretty cool place.

There are some students at my construction classes from job corps and they were pretty angry.

It's certainly unfortunate that they're being shut down to put a few more cents in the pockets of people who don't need any more money.

On a side note... how many jobs have you held since you got out of Job Corps?

I didn't realize the job corps was still active. A fellow who used to work for me went through the program 45 years ago.

Edit: Looked into it a little, the program is an abject failure by any measure. 2023 stats.
  • Average Graduation Rate (WIOA Definition): 38.6%
  • Average Cost Per Student Per Year: $80,284.65
  • Average Total Cost Per Graduate (WIOA Definition): $155,600.74
  • Post separation, participants earn $16,695 annually on average.
  • The total number of Serious Incident Reports for program year 2023: 14,913 infractions.
    • Inappropriate Sexual Behavior and Sexual Assaults Reported: 372
    • Acts of Violence Reported: 1,764
    • Breaches of Safety or Security: 1,167
    • Reported Drug Use: 2,702
    • Total Hospital Visits: 1,808

In the 60s and 70s, I lived in Spokane, about 50-60 miles from a big Job Corp center. A couple of weekend every month, they'd bus their  inmates students into town, where they'd rob the hippie drug dealers.
When my dad retired from the USAF in the late 60s, he went to work at the Clearfield, UT job corp center. He retired from there in the early 90s as their chief/lead plumber. He didn't have much good to say about the quality of people they got.
