To anyonw who's gotten the smaller copper HSF's here, are the fans 60mm or 70mm? The page says both the fan and heatsink are 60mm by 60mm, but the picture shows the fan is obviously a bit larger than the heatsink.

This is a great cooler man. My Athlon XP went from 49C idle to 42C idle. The fan colors are bright and the fan is pretty quiet.

Not bad prices, but I would still take the SVC GC68 for $4.99 any day.
That with shipping is $10. I'll send one to you for $9. This GC68 is utter junk, I have it and I am not using it after I tried and saw how crappy it was.

GC68 has been a big hype on AT for some time, it is basically discounted crap with large aluminum body, coarse bottom and clip that you need a hammer for. It comes with "40,000 hours" fan that is a junk case fan. It is no better than AMD stock cooler. I bought one after some arguments on this forum just to test it and that was enough for me to see what crap that is. So, if you want cheap junk, that is the cooler for you.

The heatsink in this deal is at least a full copper.

Then what would you suggest for a decent cheap cooler?

Nothing but retail, with Intel. For AMD try TR2-M2, you can get it for less than $15. I don't know of anything decent for less than $10, if one cannot afford $10-15 for a cooler then it is better to stay with stock cooler anyway. AMD recommends copper insert with their T'breds anyway since contact surface is so small.

It is not cheap, but the Zalman CNPS-7000Cu with fan speed controller is both quieter and cooler than the stock P4 HSF. I run mine at the slowest speed since I do not OC, but even at full speed it is not very loud. Kewl looking, too. Weighs a ton.

The early GC68s had a mirror finish bottom. Somewhere along the way they changed and made the bottom course. I guess to save time and money because they became very popular so they had to manufacture more to meet the demand. I think they became very popular because it was the lowest priced HS that could use a 80mm fan without mods. Lot's of folks were replacing the stock fan with a Panaflo L1, NMB or other very low noise fan. The clip was/is a pain to work with. If you are looking for a low cost HSF and are not planning on OC'ing this is a decent HSF fan.

You should also check out the new GC69. They have made some nice improvements over the GC68. I have several of the GC69s from SVC. The bottom is not mirror finish but it's not as rough as the GC68s. The clip is better and the HS design seems to be better. It's selling for $5.50 + shipping at SVC. Shipping for me (CA > AL) is $3.99 First Class USPS, $4.85 Priority USPS and $6.50 UPS ground.

stevejst knows a lot about HSFs but he can be a little snobish somtimes. ;)

The fan on my stock cooler broke, so I want to get something quickly, and I figured I might as well get somethign that can handle an 80mm fan so it's quieter.

I am not overclocking and don't want to spend much.

thanks for the advice. I really do not want to spend much so as long as it gets the job done I am happy. This is going to going on an XP 1700+ and when i'm done with it, it will stay there in my wifes computer and NEVER OC.

When I upgrade, ill either have another stock HS/F or ill buy something nice. However now I want something cheap, but not crap. Something cheap from SVC would be nuce becauseI need other stuff from there.

I purchased my second cooler today from Iocombo. Everything is smooth :) ... the fan itself (B605-01) is nice :)

It depends. But 33 dba or higher is loud.

In my AMD builds I now exclusively use either the Arctic Cooling Super Silent Pro or the Copper Silent TC. The Super Silent Pro is $12.99 at SVC, and the Copper Silent TC is $14.99 at SVC.

A year or so ago I decided my home office was too noisy and I wanted to quiet things down. I replaced all the 80mm case fans with PC Power & Cooling Silencer or Thermasense fans (depending on the application), and I replaced all the HSFs with one of the Arctic Cooling models listed above above. My office is quiiiiiiiieeeeet now. And heat is not an issue. I don't overclock anything, and this is a great solution for me. For comparison purposes, on it's highest fan speed the Arctic Cooling Copper Silent TC is still quieter than the HSF mentioned in the post right above mine. And since it is variable, you likely won't even have to hear it on that level very often. :)

The Arctic Cooling HSFs, like many other HSFs, use thermal sensors to control the fan speed. They are dead quiet at their lowest speeds and are still pretty dang quiet at the highest speeds. I've had several of them running 24x7 for over a year (maybe 2 now) with no problems. The ambient temp in the room varies quite a bit too.

Sure these cpu coolers are quiet but how effective are they in keeping temperatures low. I noticed the amount of air they move is not that much so I'm a bit skeptical. What kind of temperatures are you people getting (cpu, motherboard, ambient, etc) ?
