I bought a(n) MSI 7900GTX the other day and once installed (drivers as well), all of my games worked for around 5 minutes, but always shut off.

Symptom: When PC is turned on, it says "Video Card Settings reduced due to not sufficient power, this is done to prevent freezing, or overheating" I have a 400w PSU and the minimum specs for the GFX card is 400w.

Specs:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2.2GHz Socket 939
Video: MSI 7900GTX
RAM: GeIL Value 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel
Mobo: ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Socket 939 ULi M1695 ATX AMD
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 320GB
Monitor: BenQ FP93GX Black 19" 2ms LCD
Power: FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX400-PN, RoHS, 12cm FAN, version 2.0, 2 SATA, 20+ 4 pin, PCI Express, 400W

Will purchasing a new PSU fix my problem?

shut off as in what term? power was shutting down or games froze?

mind to elaborate more?

it could be overheating from video card but i'm not too sure.

edit: whoa, overlooked one section. well, power supply probably cannot handle that much, you may need to replace a power supply.

I've received this message when the power supply connector to the graphics card isn't making proper contact (or isn't attached at all). If the connector is correctly seated in the socket on the graphics card, check the small solders linking the socket to the card pcb itself - I've had one of these break, preventing the card receiving its additional power.

The power cord must have uplugged itself after I plugged it in and moved my pc. Apparently I never had a PSU plugged into my VC!!!!!! Will I be able to see an improvement in quality as well? Will I be able to see less lag in games? Or was it strictly power and should only see stable power now...

Power definately seemes to be the culprit. ~Load ramps up as you run program/game. I'm guessing 5 minutes barely got you past the menu, so that sounds about right. Otherwise, I would still look into the PSU if there are any further problems. Only 400W is cutting it close for a dual core and 7900GTX. Although a Fortron should be able to handle it.

If you have a bunch of fans in your case too, you can unplug one or two to see if your card just needs a little more juice.

This is an obvious no-brainer, it's TELLING you the PSU is the problem.
It cant be any more clear, man.

Most high power video cards nowadays need to be attached directly to the power supply becasue the power they draw is too much for the AGP/PCI-express slot to handle. If the power supply is not attached, it will basically say something about it. If you have already plugged the power directly and the you keep getting the messages, it means your PSU is not up to snuff and needs to upgraded. If they say minimum "400watts", it doesn't mean you can get away with just a 400watt PSU. Not all PSU's are created equal.

Coldkilla: So does it work now that you've plugged in the power connector on the card?

Some games now take 10x longer to load. Ever since the power cord was connected, it seems to have slown down some of my games. I just bought a higher quality PSU at 450w. Hopefully it'll fix all the little issues.

I've never seen anyone accused of hijacking their own thread.

Looking at your PSU, its an FSP 400watt so it should be decent. However, if you are going to do an upgrade, jumping from 400w to 450w is kinda like a 'baby step'. A 500 or a 550w PSU is a good starting point. Have you also installed the latest drivers for your mobo (ULI chipset drivers)?
