Are you just going to sit there contributing trash or actually say something worthwhile? Either offer alternatives or STFU.

I know where you stand regarding me staying at home, so do you have anything else?

Down boy, bown boy.

But seriously...you can pick up some nice stuff of eBay Motors, just make sure to check it out well first. Nissan Altimas are nice from 1999 on up, and can be had for as little as $3000 on a good day. If you're lucky, you might be able to find an older Jetta for cheap in the classifides, or even on eBay.

hope that helps...

He's a dirt poor student, what hints should they be dropping?
That hardline parent bullsh!t is so cliche.

He doesn't sound that bitchy and seems to just be looking for other lower cost alternatives.

You guys (ornery) are just assholes.

For you, pay up and just move out later.

Here's the deal: 21, 3rd year of university. Got a good job paying $3.5k/month for 4 months in the summer. Otherwise during the other 8 months, I make maybe about $400/month. Savings are about $4K.

My dad has been pretty anal about the gas lately and is now charging $.28 per Km ($.45/mile) that I use the car. This would include insurance, maintenance, and gas, so flat rate. Seems a bit high, but it's his car, so I have to go by his rules.

Work is about 15 miles away, so 30 miles a day. That equals about $210 a month, and that's even counting trips to Toronto, or camping outings, what have you. Insurance on the 1997 Toyota Corolla is $1600 a year for my dad, my mom and me. Without me, it drops to around $850.

Is my only choice to take this huge increase? Aside from the summers, I would drive maybe 100 miles a month. I don't think it's worth it to buy a used car and fork over HUGE for insurance.

Opinions?

edit: I'm still in school. For Christ sakes, not everyone is finished school yet. Rent/food is free until I'm done school, once I'm done they'll start charging.

College or not, cut the damn umbilical and get out on your own. I moved out at 19 and except for about 4 months when I moved back at age 20, I have lived on my own ever since.

I don't get people today. I moved out because I wanted to be on my own. My mom was surprised I was moving. I had very few restrictions while I was there, so I didn't have any reason to move except for PRIDE and SELF RESPECT.

Take your savings, put it towards a small apt, get a better job and take the bus to work. If you need help, I'm sure your parents will help you. If nothing else, they'd be glad to help because you are at least making an effort.

In other words, grow up.

Jesus. Christ. Maybe you people don't get the idea that my parents don't mind me staying at home. They would rather me save up the money or contribute to the family savings rather than give it to some landlord.

They'd rather me focus on my GPA right now, and land a good job and future. Life your life the way you want to, but don't impose on other people.

All I'm asking right now is about the car situation.

No kidding. If your parents don't mind you staying with them, then by all means, use the time to save up some money and not have to worry about renting second rate apartments until you are making big money.

Yeah, you should pull your weight and not be a burden on your parents, but it's not a bad thing to live with them for a while. I've never understood why there is such a rush to move out if you're going to school.

As for the car thing... that rate actually isn't that bad. Considering it's all inclusive, it's probably cheaper than actually owning a car of your own. Consider that even buying a car of your own, that doesn't cover exactly what this fee is covering. Even if you had your own car, you'd STILL be paying for gas, maintenance and insurance, and on top of a car payment, it would be a hell of a lot more than $210cdn a month.

Option 1:

Tell your parents that their terms are unacceptable, and that if their irrational/greedy
behavior continues, you will move out of their rent free home. Oh wait, nevermind.

Option 2:

Advise them that .45 a mile is too high for a low end Toyota and ask, no demand, that you be provided a new Lexus. For emphasis, I would tell them that I wanted a black one that dad should wash on a daily basis, even in the rain!

Option 3:

Throw them a curve ball! Switch bedrooms with them when they are at work and demand New York Strips for dinner each night, whether you are planning to be home or not.

Any option will "learn 'em"! You need to stick you yer guns!

I wouldn't think for a second that it's some sort of "hint".

It's probably a lesson in financial responsibility, moreso than a hint.

You asked for opinions--don't get upset when you get them.

I never said your parents were upset that you were still at home. However, at 21, you should be a little more self-sufficient. Instead, you are whining about paying your dad for use of the car. Why don't you get a roommate? I mean, c'mon...at LEAST buy your own car. Of course, I'm sure your dates find you VERY attractive since you are sponging off the 'rents. Bringing a date home must be REALLY romantic when your dad is walkin around in his boxers and your mom is giving you a kiss goodnight.

Yeah, we're being extreme, but you need a wake-up call. Get yourself a reliable used car, pay your own insurance, gas, etc. There is no reason you should be so reliant on your family.
