I've gotten 2 Ds and a F, but still have above a 3.0. In the cases of thes D I didnt fvck around. I busted my ass off. The F, I just said fvck it, I already had a scholarship to transfer and the F didnt drop my GPA low enough to have it yanked. Then again I was under a lot of stress and pressure. Plus I was working 55+ hrs/week.

However I agree I dont understand why people fvck around. One of my roomates has done this. Most days he sleeps till mid afternoon, has attended less than half of any of his classes. Likely will have under a 2.0 for the semester. Whats worse is its his Junior year.

I know everyone is bashing on you so I sort of feel obligated to tell you to just pull your head out and hit this next term hard. I screwed around a lot my first year, and now I am paying for it dearly, poor study habits and a hole to dig myself out of if I want to make it in this world. Like it was stated above, you are paying for this, get what you can. Plus these grades matter come time for internships and job fairs.

It is possible to turn this around if you act now, I put it off. Always telling myself that I would turn it around next term, then the next and so on. Now I am having to work my ass off while working full time to bring my GPA up.

Trust me you don't want to be where I am, I am probably going to have to retake some classes from my freshman year or maybe even take another year.

70% is a D? And 70% is bad enough for probation? Weird. Where I went to school 70% was a B and that was pretty good. They must calculate it differently.

No a D is 60-69, and is passing for some courses. A D equals 1.0 in terms of GPA. So getting straight Ds is a 1.0 for a semster, well under what it takes to get put on academic probation(some schools its, 2.0, others its 2.25, some its 2.5).

IMO, if you don't have at least a 3.0GPA, you completely wasted your time in college. A 3.5+ GPA is considered good, IMO.

One of the worst things about getting a D other than lowering your GPA is that you cant transfer them. I know this my experience.

A pass was usually about 50% I think - a very crappy pass, but a pass.

What's GPA?

Must be an American thing. I'll look it up.

Is university more difficult in the US then? If 60-70% is bad, then what is good? 90-95%? I would say no one in my class of about 70 graduating students got a 90% average... that's insane... they must calculate it differently.

I agree 100%. I've been busting my ass in college. OP, you need to get off your ass and stop partying (or whatever the hell you're doing) I wouldn't call myself "naturally" smart. I have to work at things to get it.

I barely pulled off a 3.5 in HS, and I've been pulling a 3.8 here with a major in Mechanical engineering, and double minoring in Mathematics and Engineering Science and Mechanics. (in-major GPA is 3.9)

Get your ****** together.

most colleges require at least a C

Usually it's C for classes in the major and D for all others. At least at my Uni.

I googled. Found this on a US website:

The grading system in the UK can create agonies for American Students. If a normally straight-A student recieves a 70 on his/her first paper, it's difficult to accept that a 70 in UK-terms is an A or a first. So here's a comparison to help prepare you for the grading shock!

UK Grade
Conversion Chart
A....... 70+
B+..... 65-69
B....... 60-64
C+..... 55-59
C....... 50-54

Students with an average of 70 or higher are awarded a first-class honours degree (equivalent to an A). Other degree categories are: an upper second (equivalent to A-/B+), a lower second (equivalent to a B) or a third class (equivalent to a C) honours degree.

At the graduate level, students with a 70 or higher are awarded a master's degree with distinction. Students with a 60-69 are awarded a master's degree with merit.

So there we go - I guess they calculate it differently.

Whew - for a second there I thought I was an idiot :D

60 - 70% is not bad. Most classes I take are graded on a curve. I may haul ass on my HW assignments, but I always get marked down for not showing enough work. I mean totally WTF. I use a Ti-89. I hate showing how I integrate and most engineering readers don't give a damn how you solve your integrals. This particular class has HW readers that are nazis and make sure you do every step, and even though I get 80% of the content correct, I usually score like 60s or so on my HW. The average is usually 50 - 60, so I'm not too disappointed.

My thermo midterm this semester had a 55% as an average. Professor said average = B+ (upper div) so I'm pretty happy because I scored 1 stdev above. A- fasho? Heh.

Now some classes are retarded. My engineering math class is retarded. He pulls problems from the stupid HW and changes #s around for our midterms. So just study the HW and you get a near-perfect. MT averages were 84 and 90 for the 2 midterms. I scored barely below median the first time, and I havent gotten my midterm for #2 back but I'm sure I scored WELL, but... how well?

D's are not a problem. I love D's. In fact, C- is the devil. You get a 1.667 on your GPA with that and you CANNOT RETAKE. Ds and Fs are retakes here and yea.. I got a D in my 1st year. I retook it for a B+. Because of that my GPA was nice at a 3.2. Heh.

Now back to studying.

With a little less effort you could probably get all F's next semster. It's people like you that give slackers a bad reputation. Cmon get with the program. Nobody likes a half ass slacker.
