There seem to be absolutely calm in CPU activities/review/news on any site, seems all hands are bracing for the big release date of conroe and 1/2 priced AMD sale the day after. Then all hell will break loose, people will start a wave of conroe frenzy like they did with PS3. Benchmarks will be flying all over the place, new systems will be built at an incomprehensible rate, every person and their neighbor will be upgrading their "old and worn" system to conroe or 1/2 priced AMDs. Duel core will be in the box of every computer on the planet ... an new and undiscovered era will beginning ... 7/23 ... it will be forever known as the big tech storm of 723 ...

Dual core... Please don't let them battle it out, way too much violence.

What about the other Intels? They are also having price drops that are just as large as the AMD ones.

And this "sign" of the apocolyse accounts for about 1% of all computer users. LOL

My prediction, dear deciples, is that conroe will be selling at 2x MSRP for the first month at least, then trail off after that. Like the venerable PS3 during its debute. Yes, all that Pentium 4/D stuff will slash to 1/3 or even 1/4 its current price making them easily suitable for any 5 year old's playing toy collection ...

It all sounds swell. but I don't see how upgrading to conroe will do anything for me. It will be a lot faster than my opty, but I won't be able to tell without benchmarks, and while super pi is great, I find it a bit boring after just a few hours.
Anyone who does upgrade and wants to get rid their worthless old x2 or opty for a few bucks, pm me. I won't pay much for your old junk, but even a few bucks is better than tossing it in the trash where it belongs.

I'm guessing you use your computer primarily for gaming.

For me the video encoding would very noticeable over a my Opty 175. However the Opty would not suddenly become "old junk" but rather take the place of the household comp (1Ghz PIII), which would take the place of the backup computer (500Mhz Celeron), which would then serve as an the comp for a home built Jukebox.

Correct about the gaming, though I do a bit of cad as well. I'm far more limited by drive speed than cpu.
btw, What the heck is video encoding? I see a that a lot of people do it, and always assumed it was changing analog video to digital, as a way of getting old vhs tapes on to dvd. If thats correct, I do some of that as well, but I do it with another machine. You stick in the tape you want to copy and a blank DVD and press start, when the little light turns green it's done.

Might be a couple NDAs floating around preventing them from reporting the juicy bits.

That and anyone with a Conroe is too busy playing around with it and benchmarking to talk to anyone else. I won't be going Conroe unfortunately. Assuming the AMD price drop goes as planned, I'm sure to nab a X2 processor on the cheap and that will be cheaper than buying new ram, new mobo and a new cpu even if it won't be as powerful as a Conroe.

People with 775 mobos that support dual core should be happy with the 940D going to $133 as well... the 805 junkies are going to get dump that little guy in a hurry, I bet, for these guys...

Not the greatest, but it is also like upgrading to a cheap *crappy* x2 after conroe. :)

anyone who is saying x2's are going to be crap after conroe is insane. However, if retail conroe's clock as well as the engineering samples then there will be some big benefits to be had (looking like if I can hit 3.2 or higher a run which is currently taking 8 hours on my 2.6ghz x2, will take 6 or less, which is a big deal, though obviously it would have to be prime stable for 24+ hours as if its realy fast and comes up with incorrect answers it doesnt help me.)
