Ok so im gonna get the new Asus MOBO, but should I bother getting SATA stuff too? HD and CDRW and DVDRW drive?

I was thinking about getting a SATA harddrive and keep the CD/DVD side on regaular utlra ATA setup. what you guys think?

also, think i need 2 get 2 drives, like a CD and DVD reader, and then a CDRW DVDRW drive for all my burning? I was thinking about just getting a NEC 3520A, and i dont do any cd copying, if i do its to ISO so. what you guys think?

I'd go SATA over IDE, there's plenty of SATA devices out the market now. Even tho it overs virtually no performance advantage of ATA100, the warranty of SATA drives is higher than that of ATA100 drives. For WD's 250GB ATA100 drive, its 1 year; For WD's 250GB SATA drive, its 3 years.

SATA HD's and ATA Optical is the way to go. There aren't many (if any) SATA Optical drives out as of yet, so I'd just go ATA for those atm.

If you aren't going to copy CD's / DVD's direct, then you can save some cash by only having one drive (like the NEC 3520A). But I personally recommend getting something like the NEC 3520 as well as a regular DVD/CD Rom drive just in case you end up wanting to make direct copies ect. DVD/CD Rom drives are plenty cheap, so best to be prepared.

That may be true for WD but Seagate is still 5yr across the board.

I personally like PATA. I don't need drivers to install OS or Ghost or anything else.
It just works.

I believe Plextor is the only company with SATA optical drives. If you don't need DL DVD burning support, the PX-712sa is a great drive, and can be found for about $100.

I run all scsi hdd's but I can't wait for a DL SATA DVD burner so I can eliminate all IDE drives in my system. Just getting rid of the bloated cables is enough reason to go with SATA, besides the fact that some of the newer boards are coming out with only 1 IDE port.

PX-716sa is out now.

well i can run the optical off the IDE, i only have one, even if i do get a secondary. Then leave the 2 sata's open for drives later on. i think thats what im gonna do. i can alwasy go to a sata optical later on anyways.

The tiny cables alone make it worth the small extra amount each drive costs vs. regular ATA, but add the fact they are hot-swappable AND its the new standard and its a no brainer.

Cant wait till there are more optical drives out that are SATA.
