All 19" and 21" CRT monitors at Dell Small Business are 15% off w/ free ground...when you add it to your cart it does not show up correctly, just call it in.
This is how I got my G520P, I called it in and they honored it with no hassel at all.

For example:
Sony E540 21" monitor is $487.01 + tx shipped...not hot but about as good a price as you will find on this unit.

Anytime you can get a decent deal and FREE SHIPPING on one of those 21" CRT behemoths, I consider it a hot deal. They weigh 70-80 lbs with box!

damn that's a big monitor.... it's tempting to get a huge crt for less than an lcd but lcd are so compact and aren't as harmful... blah

another couple of months at the rate LCD's are dropping, and a 19" LCD will be comparable to the CRT prices now... it's probably worth the wait.

LCDs will have bottomed out on price, as the manufacturers are selling for no profit right now. Look for the next price drop in 2004. I work for a company that makes components for FPDs, that's why I have some insight on this. FPDs don't need to be < CRTs to generate sales, because they have appeal on their own.

I'm both...you forgot to mention that you are going blind by looking at high resolutions...
This will secure my sight problems forever.

The LCD lust is not as strong for some of us lucky enough to have high quality 21" CRT's. LCD's are like beautiful women. Lovely to look at, but very expensive, and don't do everything as well as one would like.

So which of these are the good deals and good monitors?

I've decided not to get a LCD because of the need to run it in it's native resolution.

Honesty, I have yet to see an LCD that looks as good as CRT and that I can afford.;)

Here are the good deals and the good monitors:

Hitachi

Yes, these are refurbs, but the best refurbs in the universe.

Almost forgot - For the sharpest, clearest text available, you will want the CM823F, which is the only flat shadow mask CRT manutactured. You can't buy a better monitor for the price.

I think DVD movies will look better on a CRT, no?

The price at the link for a refurb is $519. You can get it shipped new for around $730 (pricewatch.com prices).

Bentvalve, if I'm not mistaken you got your Sony CPD-G520 from Dell for around $519 shipped. Why have they jacked up their prices so much? Techonweb.com had it for $573 shipped a month or so ago and now they are asking $699. It doesn't look to be obtainable for much less now. Why? I figured that it was because of the Xmas season - Supply/Demand action and that they would be available for little over $500 again sometime soon.

With your insight did you see the huge drops on the larger LCDs that came this year?

LCDs still don't have the color depth and resolution of CRTs. Not sure they ever will. I'll take a CPD-520P please...

When I can get a 19"+ size flat panel that does 1600x1200 for under $500 a piece, I'll buy. Until then, flat panels are overpriced.

<edit>Oh yeah! And why is it that I can get a 15" LCD display on a Dell laptop nearly 2 years ago that does 1600x1200, but the average stand alone LCD display of a larger size can't do that res?

I just checked it out. The CM823F refurb sells for $519. Ground shipping is $35. If I pay tax (do I? I'm in CA, but I can't tell, I don't think, without buying), it comes to $596. That's not too different from a new one at $743 shipped from Techonweb.com. The refurb is discounted 19% in comparison to this Techonweb deal.
