Finally some good news for a change. Glad everyone came out alive. Condolences to friends and family of the one diver who lost his life a few days ago trying to get them out.

Great! But I am automatically suspicious of feel good stories that distract the populace from the bigger picture. It was inevitable that this story would get a lot of ink/air-time, but from the get-go it was obvious that it got way too much. I don't have a problem with it. What we didn't need is some prime time spectacle because a SC nominee was announced. That was an ego stroke, akin to LeBron James taking his talents to South Beach.

That was a monumental project, hats off to the Thai people who got this done. Elon Musk deserves a big thank you too, for wanting to help and putting his money where his mouth was. They didn't use "the sub" but I won't be surprised if it comes in handy again, or is used as a template for another design that could save lives.

A story like this can help remind us that we are all human. And the lengths we go to save one another can exemplify the sort of empathy and compassion the world could use a whole lot MORE of. It's not a waste of story if one understands the narrative. OTOH, now that it has ended do you think the quality of our news reporting will improve? I seriously doubt it.

Now that it's over, I hope to hear more about why those kids went into the cave (and kept going for 3 MILES) in the first place... especially since they didn't know how to swim??

What I don't get, is the major divergence from the original time of several months. Were there just a lot of idiot pundits commenting on something they actually had no details on. I always thought that "this would take months" was utter BS in the first place.

I have to imagine it started to rain, thus flooding the cave from the entrance.

They weren't very deep in the cave when it started to rain and the cave started to flood. They were forced to retreat further into the cave ahead of the rising water.

That's what I've read and I guess it is one of those "you had to be there" situations. My reaction would be to GTFO of the cave. I guess if you are with others who could not swim though, that may change things.

Also depends on how fast moving the water is and if it is covering the entire cave between you and the entrance.

I look at it this way: given that Trump produces horrible news on virtually a daily basis, it was good to have a story like this as a pressure valve. Don't ignore the ways Trump is screwing over the US and the planet, just be glad to focus on this for a while.

Thailand put in a lot yes, but it was a multinational effort with over 1000 people, and the majority of the dive rescue team weren't Thais but foreign divers.

There are many unregulated venues compared to the US. I used to work for a company who's HQ was in Oslo Norway. Some of our people went over there and visited a public ski jump ramp. Can you imagine something like that here?

While sometimes we go overboard a little regulation can be a good thing.
