Alka Seltzer and Birds

When I was growing up, my friends used to tell me that if a bird ate a peice of Alka Seltzer, it would blow up. I always envisioned a bird eating that piece in its nest, then flying off and exploding in mid-flight. Feathers and all slowing falling to the ground.

Then I found out that only its insides explode, and the bird would just fall to the ground.

Anyone see this?

Indeed it is true. My friends and I used to feed Alka-Seltzer to seagulls back home. They didn't explode in midair but they did die a very messy death. I don't recommend doing this in front of people with weak stomachs.
