I'm curious, are IPS monitors more for general/development use and not for gaming?

I do a bit of graphic editing, a little bit of coding, but I'd also like to game on games. Would this be okay?

It should be fine for most gaming, a lot of people recommend them for Eyefinity setups.

I've been looking for a HP ZR24w for my son for around $340. Sometimes they sell for that, sometimes not. IPS and 1920 x 1200 are important to us. How would this U2412M stack up against a ZR24w?

I don't typically fancy anything with the word 'Dell' on it. But, I have to admit, I have heard a few people say that a U2410 is a good monitor. I don't know if the 'U2410M' is the same as the U2410.

*Edit*: I should mention that I tend to hold onto monitors for at least 4-5 years. So quality is important to me.

I've toyed with getting one of these for the past few months. The 2412M and zr24w are almost always mentioned in the same breath and are usually pretty comparable in price. If the 2412M is really $40 cheaper right now then that's definitely a better deal.

Dell sells awesome monitors. I was shocked when so many people recommended them for my 2209wa purchase a couple of years ago, but I've been unbelievably impressed with it. Also, from reading/researching, I would have zero qualms at all about buying a monitor from them.

edit: keep in mind that both of these monitors are e-ips. My ownership experience has been great with mine, but you can't really compare either of these to a U2410. Also, I just read several of the customer comments regarding the monitors, they are overwhelmingly positive from non-mac users. One of the benefits of dell vs, say, newegg, is that their return policy on monitors is excellent.

That's exactly where I was before I bought my U2410 and I have to say I absolutely love it. The U2412 doesnt seem to quite live up to the u2410, but at nearly half the cost right now it seems like a steal.

Hardware Canucks review did mention some ghosting. That might be a deal breaker to me, though it has a faster response time then the U2410 but I haven't noticed any....Unless I play UT 2004.

Well, a quick google search and we found a ZR24w for $380 including shipping and tax. We expected to pay around $340, so, we decided to split the difference on the balance. He'll chip in another $20 and so will I.

I'm VERY happy with my HP ZR24w and I expect him to be also. BTW: The ZR24w is a S-IPS monitor, not E-IPS.

I've had both a U2410 and a U2412M and I like the U2412M better. They're both stupendous monitors.

I've bought Dell monitors for years, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

For a very short time upon its inception Dell had crap monitors, but they corrected that in a heartbeat and have consistently made some of the best around for the money. Can't say the same for HP but at least you're enjoying the monitor.

I usa a DoubleSight DS2700W (PVA) display for gaming and its like 10ms. Can't tell the difference between my Dell TN panel which is rated at 2ms, except the PVA display is substantially brighter.

This panel gets great reviews. Just keep in mind that Dell hits this price point by using a 6 bit panel so the color space is a little reduced compared to a normal 8 bit IPS panel.

That's just because it's an e-ips panel. The u2410 has full 8 bit support.

Basically unless you need the extra colors and don't care much about exact color accuracy (i.e. not editing pictures for your professional studio), then the U2412M will work. And for $200+ less than the 2410, it's worth it.

Yeah I pounced on this deal right after midnight on Thanksgiving night...it had been $350+tax/shipping for most of the week and I had a feeling it was going to go on sale for BF. Building a new PC for my dad and thankfully he mentioned he also wanted to replace his ancient 19" panel in time for this sale!

e-ips is a subset of s-ips and this is e-ips.

What's the sense of the relative quality of these eIPS panels? Are they closer to conventional (and expensive) IPS displays, or closer to the TN experience?

I have a U2412M for work (software developer) and it is nothing short of amazing. I had 2x U2410s at my last job, and I would take the U2412M over them.

EDIT: Oh, you're the same person from the other thread... I gave a much fuller answer in that thread.

Yeah sorry, I found the more on-topic thread after this post, my apologies.

Anyone use these for gaming? The 8ms response time has me worried.
