For all those considering cancelling your 30GB iPod orders from 5/15, you should check your order status today. Last night, I got an email saying my iPod would be delayed until 6/20. I was considering calling and cancelling, but I checked the order status and it shipped yesterday! It will be in my hands on Tuesday. Several others at the FW forums have reported the same thing so you may want to check that first. ;)

YES! Just checked and mine shipped yesterday too. I sent Dell an email yesterday telling them to NOT cancel my order and to please explain why they are "out of stock" when I have called Apple and they have told me there is no shortage of 30GB iPods. In fact Apple suggested I cancel my Dell order and order through them and it would be out in 2-3 days.

That's the point, that you wouldn't need a display to manage 128 or 256 MB (about 2 or 4 hours of music.)

What I was getting at is 20GB (30GB/40GB) is a little bit of overkill for a "portable" mp3 player/brick. I'm sure there are some uncommon situations where having 2 weeks worth of music would be nice to have (do iPods take batteries or are they cordless/rechargeable?), but for your everyday use, a few hours would probably suffice. Of course, this is all just MHO[1], but I think it is the "coolness"[2] factor, more than actual utility that makes these things so popular.

Hmmm, belkin offers a external AA battery power supply for the pods. If you are worried about not having enuff juice. And the rechargables AA are like dirt cheap. Which brings the point as to why would you pay for a 50 buck replacement ipod internal battery unless you want the orignal weight/size.

And with only 128/256 means that you would need to download music to your player more often that you actually need to. Ipod is suppose to allow you to carry all that you "possibly" want with you so if you "explicit" mind decides to want to listen to a particular piece YUO can. Anyway, dont read into it too much. Overkill 4 U may be anothers FREEDOM.

Answer: The original weight/size and look. Why would you want to effectively double or triple the thickness of the iPod. The point is that it's as small as possible, and this new iPod (even the 30GB version) is significantly smaller than the previous 20GB version. It has rounded corners so it's also easier to grip and it looks quite a bit more elegant. The cradle is also a nice idea: I like that fact that there is now a stationary solution for charging/transferring and that the cradle itself has an audio-out port.

The only drawback I've noticed so far is that the buttons are a little too sensitive.

update....

I got the e-mail last week about the delay until the 20th. I called up dell and complained and kept going up the ladder until I got to speak to a shipping manager.

I don't know if it helped at all, but my iPod shipped out that day, and should be in my hands tomorrow!

Thanks anandtech again for a great deal and mad props to luv2save for pointing this one out!!!!!

Can someone change the topic to mark this deal dead? If it comes back alive then we can rename it back....but it must piss people off who are paying $500 for these puppies :)

dell no longer sells ipods at all
That may explain some things....but that article is over 2 months old and refers only to the older models. The deal we got in on was well over a month after that story so it's hard to say what the story is. When I found out there was going to be a delay I went to the Apple website and noticed that Dell was not listed on the Apple website as an "authorized reseller" of iPods on the internet. I called Apple and they assured me that Dell was an authorized reseller. But then you never can really trust the knowledge of the people answering the phones to really know some of this stuff.

Well, it's been two weeks since my iPod supposedly shipped out and I've still yet to see hide nor hair of it. I called Dell to ask what the heck is going on, because my UPS status just asays Billing Information Received*. So I talked to someone there. Apparently, my iPod is still enroute to UPS and should be there in a week or so (I hope!!). He asked me if I wanted anything to compensate me for the delay. I said okay, "How about something to go with my iPod." He offered a firewire hub, but I don't have any firewire devices and the new cable for the iPod is funny, so he then offered me another MP3 player. He offered me a Nomad 128MB MuVo. That was pretty nice of them. Hopefully when my iPod arrives, they will be great friends. The Nomad should arrive next week or so, so at least I'll have some tunes in the gym until my white wonder comes in.

I guess Dell is okay after all.
