Although I am currently sharing a dedicated server hosted at The Planet datacenter I purchased the $25/yr account from HostPC to get more exposure to the Direct Admin control panel.

Also a reminder that 1and1.com is offering FREE WEB HOSTING for 3 years with 500MB/5GB.

Any known problems with these guys hijacking a domain name once you transfer it to them?

Zorro - ROTFLMAO I hope you're not serious.

I posted that thread you're referring to and that was the Christmas special, this is the New Years special.

patrickj - I would recommend registering your domain with a real domain registrar (such as Dotster, NameCheap, GoDaddy, etc.). As long as you register the domain with a legit domain registrar and your email address is listed in the WHOIS lookup then no web host can "hijack" your domain. If someone were to attempt to "hijack" your domain an email would be sent to you asking for permission.

This is a good deal if you need basic web hosting. I use mine mostly for webmail and becuase I like the DirectAdmin control panel.

Actually, I registered my domains years ago with Network Solutions. I have read that there have been problems with some web hosting companies (1 and 1 I believe) not transferring a domain name to another web hosting service (dns transfer).

Unless you have registered corporate or business domains, you should consider transferring them to GoDaddy.com which is an ICANN accredited domain registrar.

As the registered domain owner YOU choose which DNS name servers your domains use. So after signing up with HostPC.com web hosting, they send you an e-mail with the two DNS name servers to use, you go to your domain reigstrar's web site, login, update your domain with the primary and secondary name servers listed in your "welcome e-mail".

I haven't checked on this for quite some time, but network solutions used to charge an outrageous fee to transfer a domain name to another registrar.

Just wanted to clarify some information,

IF you transfer your domain registration to us, you're really transferring it to Enom :

Total Name Registrations (in all TLDs): 2,549,997 (as of 12/29/2003 3:32:24 PM).

We use "Registry Rocket" - which means you control the DNS, you control the information, you control the passwords - our name doesn't appear in the registration details at all. IF anything was to happen to HostPC, Enom would take control of our account (or any of their registration resellers) and administer them themselves. Losing control of your domain is nearly impossible. I'll admit, I've seen a couple of "shady" resellers out there that have gone in and changed the client information, but on the two I've encountered that did that, neither are still in business.

Bottom line, your info/domains are safe with us, but transferring your domain to our registrar is NOT required... all we need is you to point your DNS to your assigned servers - do that wherever you're most comfortable.

Thanks
Joe

I understand that the demo for Direct Admin is somewhat disabled, however, the control panel looks somewhat limiting. I don't see where you would set up an autoresponder for email, create folders, or configure your index page. Are these capabilities in the complete control panel? I don't see anything about FP extensions either. Maybe I missed all of this somewhere? I was in the Admin control panel demo area.

I'm *real* tempted by this, but am a bit wary of registering my own domain. Is there any way to ensure that other people won't have access to my contact details with a WHOIS query?

I jumped in on this also, although I'm not ready to put anything up yet.
In response to this particular question, when I registered my domain through GoDaddy, they offer some sort of proxy domain service far an additional $12/yr that hides your info from a whois query.

I'm a complete newb at this sort of thing, so I may or may not know what I'm saying :)

Are there any promotional reseller deals? I got in earlier and am fairly impressed. I'm beginning to like the administration interface more than Ensim...:D MY first domain, aarr.org is up and I'm waiting for aarr.net to start resolving to the aarr.org site.

I may be able to match those plans for $15/year and $30/year respectively. Feel free to let me know if you are interested.

Dang! Another HOT web hosting deal. According to HostPC:

"Due to continued requests for this package, we've discussed this with our staff and advisors, and have decided to offer these packages as permanent additions to our lineup."

Would've signed up for this deal, but since I already did the 1&1.com deal for 3 years FREE, don't have any real reason at this point in time to sign up for this HOT deal. Oh well, we'll see...

But their prices are $12/year and $25/year. May I ask what makes your offer better? (Not trolling).
