I'm not sure if this really qualifies as a hot deal.

I've been looking for a WHS box for some time now. I was originally going for the HP but ended up building my own box. The Acer unit came out in Japan last month and it looks pretty sweet. This is the first time I've seen it in the states. If I saw this a week ago I think I would have jumped on this for sure.

Spec wise it seems very similar to the HP EX485. No VGA port so it's a similar headless unit. I have no clue on any software add ins like those that come with the HP unit.

NCIX is currently throwing in a 1TB Hitachi drive as a bonus, so this unit comes with 2TB of total storage. I spent about $250 on my Atom mobo/cpu, Qpack case, and WHS OS. I'm using spare ram and drives. If I got this Acer instead I'd be paying an extra $150 for 2TB of storage and a sweet tiny (~8"x7"x8") case.

Thoughts?

edit 5/12: Includes 1TB WD Green (wd10eads?) and 1TB Seagate (7200.12)

Wow, that's a gorgeous little case! And it has an Atom - I bet it would run FreeNAS! The price isn't too bad - 4 x 500gb @ $60 each = $220 or 2 x 1TB @ 100 each = $200, so the NAS part is only around $180 - $200 here (case, power supply, Atom motherboard, 4 hot-swap bays, plus WHS I guess).

Now, it says max HDD capacity is 4TB...is that per-bay, or total (i.e only 1TB per bay)?

1TB per bay for total of 4TB. I can't remember if the HP's had problems with 1.5TB drives. Maybe these Acer's have the same problem?

And yes, case is beautiful. I like it even better than the MediaSmart cases which I think are great.

Gah, I wish I could find some more reviews on this. I may just bite the bullet and use the parts I just bought for a HTPC or something.

edit: 1.5tb drives do indeed work with the HP. I can't see why they wouldn't work with this Acer.

Puts my home made WHS to shame. :) My only concern is the cooling of the system. A few have reported high temps.

Incredible product! I've been waiting for this for some time. The cheap net storage boxes just didn't do it for me. The price is definitely right--thanks OP!

The bad thing? $35 for shipping/insurance!

I just ordered around 4:00PM PST and it said there were only 14 or so left. So if you're on the fence, order one now before it's too late!

sold out.

I know that the $399 price was only until today, but does anyone know if the free 1TB HD offer also ends today?

CPU is iffy, but it is packing a fair bit of RAM. I'd say it's reasonably hot.

It's a file server - I used to run mine on a 200mhz Pentium and it was just fine. A single-core 1.6ghz Atom is more than overkill :D

For some reason Canada was the first country to get these in North America. These units should be trickling out to US vendors any day now.

If pricing remains the same ($400 or less) I'm definitely going to pick some up. I put together another WHS for a friend who bought all the parts and this is what it came out to:

Atom 330 cpu/mobo: $90
Case/Psu: $50
OS: $100
2GB Ram: $20
1TB Green HD: $90

Total: $350

For another $50-100 or so we could get the smaller case with hotswappable bays. Definitely worth it. The 1TB bonus drive here made this a no-brainer.

edit: I did some more digging on this unit and found out it has an open PCI slot and a VGA header on the mobo.

One of the fun things about WHS is that you can actually do a lot of other stuff with it. That requires memory and CPU power. You also need CPU to do parity calculations, that sort of thing.

I have had my H340 for just a few days now. This unit is great! There is a lot of support out there for Windows Home Server and seems like more is on the way. For $435 shipped, this was a great deal! I have my SqueezeCenter software running on it (using beta version) and all the desirable features work flawlessly. Sure beats the crappy network storage box i bought less than a year ago for $180 (no HDs). Thanks again OP!

Not as cheap as before, but 1TB free gift is back. It's now a Seagate instead of an Hitachi. How can one tell if this is the problematic Seagate 1 TB?
