Alienware video card upgrade question

My friend has an alienware area 51-M 5500 laptop with an ATI 9700 graphics card. We want to know, can you buy a new graphics card for this laptop (x800??) from a place like new egg or do you have to go through alienware? Also, do you think the next generation gpu's (or something better than x800) is out/will be out shortly??

As far as I know, you can't replace a notebook video card. If you can, it'd definintely need to go through the manufacturer.
