apples & oranges. You can't buy parts for a Rolls and assemble them yourself and come out cheaper then just buying one. A Rolls Royce is a hand-crafted piece of art. A computer is purely mechanical.

I don't see why everyone hates alienware. I know you can build it yourself for less, but that's not the point. Alienware is for people who want a fast system and don't want to build it themselves. They want a no hassel experience, just pay and play and that's what alienware provides - along with so many extras (drivers and patches on their website, dedicated game servers, etc) and great customer support.

And they build great systems. For someone who wants a hassel free, sure fire system, and has the money, they're great.

Agreed. If I have a ton of spare money down the road I would easily just buy an alienware so I have someone to go to if one of my parts fails. Right now building is my best bet because I can make one just as good, if not better then the alienware, for half the cost.

Well, that's comparing support. A friend of mine got an Alienware, had some weird issues, they said it was software configuration and left him hang out to dry. This was two years ago, but unless you are actually paying for something, don't; that is my logic.

For the money, you could always build with the best components out there, and if something fails, throw it out and get another one 😛

Things you can do with money saved building your own computer rather than buying an AW:
-Buy a dog. I'd suggest a golden retriever, but I'm a bit biased(kinda like that AW vs. DIY comparison 😉 )
-Buy tons of games. You'll be broke after buying the Alienware, so you won't be able to use that crazy power that's stuffed in there.
-Put a down payment on a car.

Anyone care to add? 🙂

I posted this deal awhile back.

As I said then, with the 500 dollar rebate the price is very comparable to a homebuilt system. In fact the exact same system at NewEgg would have cost me more to build it myself.

there actually are some good deals on the website, particularly the Aurora and Area-51 desktops...

for $1000-1250 you can have a rocking system that's totally upgradable.

This thread makes me sad...I moved back from florida from lack of work prospects. Less than 24 hours of my return I get a call from alienware stating they want me for their product development engineer opening. I almost started crying 🙁
