Yeah thats a decent deal, I am curious however which LCD panel this comes with. The details didn't list the specs. I know through Alienware (Dell) directly you have the option of a ...

15.6-inch WideHD+ 1600x900 (900p) WLED
or
15.6-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED

Specs on Newegg only indicate anything other than "15.6 High Def".

Good deal for an Alienware, but not so great when you compare it with other laptops that have similar specs. For example, the Asus G53JW-XN1 is already priced at $1199 with a GTX 460M which is more powerful than the 5850. It does come with 4GB RAM instead of the 6GB the Alienware has, but for $40, you can pick up a 4GB stick and double it.

TL;DR: Alienware needs to get off of it's cloud and set their pricing more competitively.

I'm almost certain that because it says "1.56 inch High Definition Display" that it has to be 1920x1080 because 1600x900 is not considered to be high definition.

You're right. I haven't researched prices since December when I bought my envy. Back then that exact Asus was $1500 and now sells for $1199. I'd definitely go for that Asus with the 460m over the alienware.

This is the exact same as the ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 For $300 more and a lesser GPU (460m vs. 5870m) I just picked one up with a two year warranty at J&R (newegg was out at the time) for $1,011 and so far it is amazing, better then the Alienware 300 bucks less, and no stupid lighting.

better then 1366x768 and it isn't really all that bad (typing this on my ASUS G73JH)

I've been spoiled by my envy's beautiful 1080p screen. Not trying to sound like a monitor snob but there is no way I could go under 1080p on a laptop screen again.

I felt the same way, i was spoiled for a few months when my friend lent me their envy with the 1080p radiance display. But after buying this ASUS with the 1600x900 display i have to say i miss the radiance BUT i can do without.

I guess it depends on your needs or concerns whether you think this is a good deal. I really wanted the Asus G53 but I've read threads where owners of Asus and MSI waited weeks to get their laptop back when sending them in for repair. So knowing how laptops especially gaming laptops are more pron to breakdown I considered RMA time. If I could live without my laptop for a couple weeks then sure I'd get the G53.

I first had a Dell 9300 with 1920x1200 then gateway 6860 with 1440x900 both 17" and had no problem adjusting to the lower resolution. Whats surprising in my search for a laptop this time around is the huge majority of laptops come with 1366x768 so I actually consider 1600x900 a plus.

Heres my post at notebook review looking for advice on what laptop to buy. If Voodooi (1200+ posts) knows what he's talking about then the M15x was the clear winner if you can't live without your laptop.

I have the M15x ordered through newegg but it hasn't shipped yet and I can still cancel. You guys have me second guessing myself. Which isn't a bad thing when making an expensive purchase. ;)

It's pretty much the M15x or Asus G53JW-XN1 (not interested in refurbs). I'm under the impression that the 5850 easily overclocks to 5870 specs. So that sort of nulls the video difference. The only other two things I can think of to consider are screen resolution and customer service.

From my experiences alienware is like an over priced good looking dell, all of my asus laptops (3 of them the g73jh being the latest) have all been excellent build quality, and the one time I had to send in my laptop (bad sick of ram) it was 9 day turn around, I felt that was decent and thier customer service (to me) was very helpful. This obviously won't reflect everyone's opinion but in my books i'd take ASUS over dell any day.

If you can find one it wouldn't be cheap.

Dell XPS 15 has 1080p screen.
If you think i5, and geforce 420 graphics = decent

50$ code LH6?VFXTKG73VJ

You can get a nice 1080p
nice speakers
blueray
slower cpu and graphics

for about 200 less, 1000$
if you want bluetooth and backlit keyboard 1050$ until wednesday

i personally just wouldn't get the alienware because of the 1 newegg review that said it had crap speakers, and low res screen... but i just use massive 15" laptops to watch and listen to tv

You misunderstand he asked for 1920x1200 that is a 16:10 aspect ratio as opposed to 1920x1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio, 1920x1200 laptops do exist but they are few and far between.

"high def" is 1080p, but I'd chat with a newegg rep before buying it to confirm.

1900x1200 resolution is a dying breed, I think they just cost too much that not many of them were sold

Alienware has always been known to be a bit over priced for it's specs, similar to Apple...but if you like the look you got to pay. :)
