alienware computers

im thinking about getting one of these gaming systems for when i go to college this summer (100% sure its gonna be AMD based)

what do you guys think about their systems? any reasons why i should/shouldn't buy from them?

i wouldn't decide what cpu your gonna buy 6 months from now...... who knows exactly where we will be.

alienware is hella expensive but they make a good computer with top notch parts.... edit: (well at least they're good parts)

If you don't know how to or don't feel confortable building a computer now, then start studying up. You should easily have the skills to build your own PC by summer. Then you can build a real PC, with the parts that you want.

They perform well enough, but they're overpriced and the service isn't great. If you can do it, I recommend building your own. If you can't, I recommend OxfordPC or GamePC, they basically take components and build top notch systems and have good support (and ATers can help you select components).

im glad i asked this before buying one of their systems. like some of you suggested, ill probably end up building again -unless i need to get a laptop.

Don't get alienware, they went from a super high quality manufacturer, to building decent systems, but charging the same outrageous prices.

Me and a friend are starting our own custom systems place, me in canada, and her in the US. Our prices will be close to what you pay online or so we hope, just shipping which always sucks.

For AMD OEMs, I'd go with MicronPC, Monarch Computers, or Oxford PC. Of course Compaq and HP aren't that bad, but they don't give much of a selection at all compared to these 3 OEMs.

e-phex makes an excellent point, there's no use in deciding now what brand cpu you're going to get in 6 months. AMD has been the price/performance leader for a while now (and is what I use), but Intel is making some serious strides with the Northwoods. The falling price of RDRAM/rising price of DDR SDRAM helps balance things out as well.

I was considering alienware a few months ago and did some research. I found horror stories galore from past and current customers of alienware. I mean a lot of em. Ranged from deceitful practices, unauthorized credit card charges, never getting the same answer from different customer support ppl. and if you were not happy with the finished product, good luck! I promptly cancelled my order, thankfully i wasn't too late. If you want a "gaming computer high quality from a quality and reputable company and do not want to build one then Falcon northwest is your ticket. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. I own one.
