Alienware Alpha and similar desktops

Hi guys, I have been away from PC gaming for about 2 yrs, mainly because my gaming laptop bit the dust. I have been busy with work and haven't been able to keep up with gaming tech. I read about Steamboxes and was intrigued and recently saw some articles on the Alienware Alpha and read some initial impressions. I realize it likely has a premium attached to it over building my own. I would like to pick up something, not necessarily the Alpha so I was hoping you guys had some input or other recommendations.

Actually, the Alpha is a very good deal. In the UK at least, it works out slightly cheaper than an equivalently powerful compact PC, and it is much smaller and more well designed. (Nice big blower coolers, venting air directly out of the case.)
