Hmm. I was disappointed. Sounded pretty heavy, though.

I dunno, I guess I've never been a huge AiC fan. A lot of their music is too "muddy" for me. They seemed to have pioneered that nu metal sound.

Edit: The video looks interesting though.

I don't think I'd ever call AIC "nu-metal". They were more hard rock and grunge than anything. Hell, their first album came out in 1989. The term nu-metal wasn't coined until 1995.

That said, not everyone is going to like it. Jerry's sound and playing is unique. He has a very dark undertone to his playing..and I guess I can see how parts of it would sound a bit muddy. I like that about his playing and tone though.

GRRR. OK so they want to release new stuff, fine. Have Jerry do vocals, he's done them before. He can manage guitar and vocals. Don't bring in some other guy to do vocals. :( They're my favorite band, and without Layne, there IS NO AIC.

One of the best things about AiC (and also what complete differentiates them from "nu" metal), was the harmonized vocals between Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. To not harmonize vocals, would just not be AiC. To harmonize with someone other than Layne Staley...I dunno, I'd have to hear it. If it was "different but good", I think I'd be happy.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider them nu metal either.. I just didn't know what to call that type of metal. It's "heavy", but not in a speed metal type of way. I want crunchy palm muted notes, damnit! lol

Edit: I do like a lot of AiC's material, it's just not something I go out of my way to listen to. It's fine if it comes on the radio or playlist though.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the new singer is. I admit I'm a little worried about it and hope that Jerry does quite a bit of singing as well.

June 30th is the release date of the first single. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it is.

I'm not really looking at this as an offical "Alice in Chains" and I think they probably should have used another name, but it's the name that is going to sell...and sell well if it's decent. I'm looking at this as Jerry going back to his heavy roots and he's had many years to write this material and I have high hopes for it.

Hmm.. How about grunge metal? That seems appropriate. ;) lol

Korn created nu metal, not AIC. AIC originally was a blues rock band, then glam metal in Facelift, Grunge on Dirt, and after that they have been labeled alternative metal. AIC is actually a pretty diverse band in it's musical styles over the years.

Edit:

The new song is a little winded, but is pretty good. Duval does a excellent job harmonizing with Cantrell.
