Can anyone explain the purpose of alg.exe in Windows XP? I know it is used for ftp connections but what exaclty does it do and is it used for anything else?

Alg.exe is the 'application layer gateway service'. This provides 3rd party plug-in support for Internet connection sharing.

I'm still a little confused what you mean by "3rd party plug-in support for Internet connection sharing". What kind of plugins? If I turn off ICS will ALG not be used anymore?

I'm asking these questions so I can specify the correct rules in Tiny Personal Firewall for it like which ports it should/shouldn't access etc...

I believe that is the ring 3 hosting app for software providers that right applications to the ICS plugin spec. I don't know if Tiny relies on it at all, my guess would be no. You shouldn't need that service if your not using ICS.
