ALERT! Lookalike NF7-S floods market!

1. What's the difference between the NF7-S and NF7-S2?
2. What's the maximum CPU I can use with the NF7-S? Can it do A64?

Obviously there's 2 things... a NF7-S v2 and a NF7-S2 (this is the crappy one)

Simon

the NF7S2 uses the new "GB" version of the chip which has gigabit on die and on board raid. but with the Nf7 S2 you loase soundstorm which the normal NF7-S has.

and no you can't use a A64 on it you can't on any socket A boards. the fastest chip you can get for it is a 3200 athlon xp or a 2600mobile barton (if your an overclocker)

Thanks. What's Gigabit? And which one is usually more popular? (I'm guessing NF7-S)

What's the comparision between the 3200 AXP and the 2600Mobile.. aren't the mobiles used for laptops (hence mobile?)

Simon

wow you must really be out of the loop. I was refering to gigabit ethernet

a 2600 mobile is a chip rated to run at 2600 speeds at only 45watts. but since it requires a high quality chip to do this. when you run them at higher volts (1.7-1.75) many people have gotten to run at 2.5-2.6ghz which makes it a pretty competetive chip to the lowend 64bit processors at much less cost.

The S2 version is not a good choice if ur gonna OC. It doesn't allow cpu multiplier changes, has limited voltage adjustments and other such deficiencies.

The 3200+ and the 2600+ Mobiles are really the same chip. The only difference is that the mobiles come with the multiplier unlocked. Which would require the wire trick on the desktop 3200+

Most, if not all, of the mobile 2600+ can reach speeds equal to or beyond the 3200+. At least I've yet to hear of one that won't. Mine is running 3200+ speeds at only 1.55 v whereas the desktop 3200+ requires 1.65v.

The mobile are generally considered the be the "cream of the crop" silicon-wise. Chosen to run at fast speeds at less voltage and heat, which is important in a laptop.

Whoa - there are both "NF7-S v2.0" and "NF7-S2" out there? That could mess some people up.
Mine has SATA RAID (alot of people don't use it) and Soundstorm 6-channel audio, 10/100 ethernet. Multiplier adjustable.

Wow i bought a abit nf7-s2 or whatever and WOW, no mutlipliers..... wtf talk about a waste. Now my mobile 2600+ is running at a whooping 1200Mhz, good job abit for using the NF7 name which is notorius for overclocking then giving me this piece of crap. Just a little mad 😉

Have you tried changing the FSB?

Yep, its at 200Mhz FSB and 1.2Ghz... This coming from Abit! 🙁 and Newegg has "return for exact item" crap on it. There better be a driver update soon.

and call newegg tell them you orderd the wrong version I bet they'd swap it for a standard nf7-s

Wow, no multi, that totally sucks. What is abit thinking? I can't believe they dropped o/clocking abilities And soundstorm in the same motherboard "upgrade."

Scandalous! This is BS! Newegg nooooooo! I'm mellllltinggggg!
Seriously someone needs to fix this! One of you guys, call them and speak to a manager! Tell them about the gripes on AT!

At least I think I have soundstorm, it says it on the box(?). Definitely have multis.

My invoice says:
13-127-166 MB nForce2|5P1A4D NF7-S V2 ABIT ATX * | 1 | $85.00 | $85.00 |

Abit (510)-623-0500

OK I sent this email but you who are personally invested will have to call:
Edit: title: Emergency! NF7-S2 and NF7-S version 2 confusion!! Fix the site!!
Oh no! People are freaking out on Anandtech forums that the hardware they are getting is not what they thought!

Realize this is the most recommended overclocking board of all time!! Especially for newbies!
Please please please!!!!!!!
First have someone fix the website to emphatically declare that the thing you are selling now
1. is different from the Nf7-S v2 which was the overclocking board recommended in th AT overclocking guide.
2. does not allow multiplier adjustments = basically worthless to customers that are looking for that feature
3 .does not have Soundstorm audio.

Then please beat Abit over the head until they change their evil ways!

EDIT: This is the email I sent to marketing@abit-usa.com :

Title: Emergency! NF7-S2 and NF7-S version 2 confusion causing extreme public anger!
WHY are selling a useless piece of junk with almost the same name as the best overclock board of all time?!
Are you crazy?! The NF7-Sv2 is a great board, the NF7-S2 is HORRIBLE!
And yet the description on Newegg is nearly the same.
Who is responsible for this marketing boondoggle <EDIT for civility>
You need to change the name of your junky NF7-S2 IMMEDIATELY and do a recall! Call it the NF3.5-S .. Anything but what you did call it. Some people will hate you for a long time now, regardless, but you need to minimize the damage if you value what has until now been a great history of support for overclockers.
I say this as a happy owner of the NF7-Sv2. If you didn't have some truly good products, that I had recommended to others, I would not care.

People are really complaining on Anandtech:

"The S2 version is not a good choice if ur gonna OC. It doesn't allow cpu multiplier changes, has limited voltage adjustments and other such deficiencies."

"Wow i bought a abit nf7-s2 or whatever and WOW, no mutlipliers..... wtf talk about a waste. Now my mobile 2600+ is running at a whooping 1200Mhz, good job abit for using the NF7 name which is notorius for overclocking then giving me this piece of crap. Just a little mad "

FIX IT! I propose you offer a full refund including shipping for people that complain that they got the junky board by mistake.

This board gets even better... There is no CAS 2! lol, only cas 2.5 and 3! I ended up putting my old 1800+ in here for now! Way to go abit, last time i buy your product. Go asus! ;P But do you really think newegg would let me return it if i was "confused" and thought it was a NF7-S Version 2.0. I'm going to give abit a nasty email later. Also it comes with a driver cd with the U-Guru logo right on it! and guess what, no u-guru support LOL. You get some error about how the board doesn't support it if you try to install it. Also, it comes with Nvidia system utility which is useless as there are no "advanced" overclocking options. If you could use the advanced tab you could change the multi but hey, the bios doesnt support it so the tab doesn't exist. Once again thank you abit. Usually when you see a picture of a product with the driver cd having the u-guru logo on it you would ASSUME A. that uguru would work with the board and B. it is an overclocking board. I love getting ripped off 🙁

Now these are some good people so take it easy on them, but even if you personally weren't affected, go ahead an lend your support to your fellow ATers.

I knew this was gonna happen when Abit named this stripped-down, featureless P.O.S. mobo an "NF7". People everywhere are being fooled into buying the wrong product. I see complaints over nForcersHQ and the Abit site too. I've been trying to bring it up in the nf7 threads I see to warn peeps.

Hey Spitfire -is newegg gonna let u replace it with a real NF7? I sure hope so.

EDIT: btw, nice job with ur email trexpesto!

On newegg, there are supposedly 5 reviews of the board, but only one shows. What does that tell you? And the one is obviously confused since they call it and overclocker's dream..

Looking at the specs closer, you can see the diff, esp. soundstorm, but not the CAS or multi's diff. One of the problems is that the junk one is at the top of the page so people may never scroll down to see the one they are looking for.

I found multipliers ! They are buried somewhere, but I found them (don;t have the board anymore, I shipped it out at stock, after I couldn;t OC it past stock even 3mhz !)

I looked through every single option in the bios and i assure you there are no multis. Think this board would ebay very well ? If newegg wont take it back that is.

Phew. I am currently talking to Newegg about emphasizing the difference between the two on their site. Perhaps a different program can be used to tweak, as opposed to the BIOS? No word yet from Abit.
Poor Ebay suckers.

I just saw a post about this over at the abit forums. Linky

One guy says:
I would think that NewEgg would take it back... especially if you made a big issue of it. If they balk initially - go to resellerratings.com & post about your displeasure. NewEgg takes comments on there VERY seriously. To their credit, they bent over backwards for me to "come back" & all I did was complain about how their "RUSH" processing fee had meant anything but on a couple of orders that I had made.
