Aldi is "shockingly cheaper" than Walmart?

We shop at 4 different places, all within 1-2 miles of one another. Kroger, Publix, Sam's Club, and Aldi. That's really the best way to maximize your savings. Of course you have to be smart about it since going to 4 different places is basically a cost of its own. Sam's Club is really more of a once a month or so trip so primarily it's between Kroger, Publix, and Aldi.
 
Yes. Aldi's is cheaper than walmart. By far.

The only difference being Walmart's produce is of better quality. We hardly ever buy produce at Aldi because it's just plain nasty. But their pantry goods are top notch, and usually have less crap ingredients in them comparatively than Walmart generics and are regularly cheaper. I believe Aldi off-labels name brands which is how they get away with a lot of this.

We normally get our bulk staples at Costco, fill in a lot of our weekly goods at Aldi (bread, bagels, cheese, other specific pantry goods), and then fill out the rest of our fresher perishables at Kroger.

Funny, those places are like opposite ends of the spectrum. One is cheap shitty food and the other is way overpriced shitty food.
 
Aldi split into Aldi Nord and Süd in the 60s. (Meaning North and South)

Aldi Nord owns Trader Joe's.

Aldi Süd is Aldi in the US.

I (very occasionally) shop at Aldi Nord here in Berlin, where I have about 3 Aldis in walking distance.
 
Walmart groceries aren't particularly cheap. For anything WIC approved (real food), Walmart generally costs more than Kroger and its nameplates.

Never heard of them but the ingredients for choc chip are straight off the nestle bag with oil substituted for the butter for shelf stability. In other words, exactly like every other soft choc chip cookie you can buy in any store anywhere that isn't loaded with preservatives. 😕

Except that most store bought cookies are packed with crap.
 
if you really wanted to save you'd shop around and do extreme couponing/exploiting. maybe pick up gift certificates off cardcash to save an extra couple of %.

aldi is pretty awesome though. their generic products work for me. produce and meat selection are terrible though. i'd say it's better than a regular walmart. definitely can't find as much at a super walmart/super target obviously.
 
Yeah I'd say for a lot of things they're cheaper than Walmart. My mom loves the place.

I like their cart system (gotta deposit a quarter for a cart, and when you bring it back to where it's supposed to go, you get the quarter back). I don't think I've ever seen an Aldi with carts all over the fucking parking lot, like any Walmart (or especially, Meijer) I've ever been to. You also gotta bag your own groceries, which I actually prefer anyway. I'm guessing those things help with their prices a bit too since they don't need to hire people to bag your groceries or collect carts.

Surprised to see all these positive reviews considering ATOT is full of people making over a hundred grand a year. Didn't realize you all had to penny pinch with groceries.

They do have some very cheap staples there, but you can't use a credit card and they don't give out grocery bags.

The quarter thing isn't so they don't have to pay someone to collect carts. It's to keep the dregs that shop there from stealing the carts to build an addition on their "home."
 
One just opened up and some of their stuff is a lot cheaper. There gallon milk is 2.75 or so compared to WM's 4.75.

A super Kroger's just opened but I have not been in there, the places carriers furniture, clothes and all kinds of crap.

Take everything you read with a grain ...

I have first hand experience with both stores (an Aldi is only 1.5 miles from the house). Walmarts are typically huge stores while Aldi stores are typically much smaller. Walmart carries a LOT more while Aldi carries much less ... and a lot of that is their own brand name items like SHEP dogfood (SHEP???).

The answer to your question is yes, Aldi can be much less expensive IF you don't mind buying their brand food. A lot of their stuff is good while some can be quite not-so-good (you live and learn).

My favorite part of Aldi is their produce "area' in the center of the store. They have a reasonably good selection of fruits/vegetables at much lower prices than Walmart and other big box retailers. We do 90% of our produce shopping there.

My one complaint about Aldi is their customer service ... or lack therof. They keep costs down by building smaller, no frills stores operated by very few employees (that they pay rather well). Examples of how this effects customer "service"? They do not provide you with bags (you can buy them). They do not bag your food, you do this. They use shopping carts that take quarters to use (you get the quarter back when you return the cart). My biggest complaint is that they typically keep only one checkout open at any one time (the rest of the crew is off doing other things). This can lead to a VERY long checkout line until they decide to open a second line.

You can also get free boxes, which I love. I can always use boxes. They hold my recyclables, and the whole thing goes out to be picked up.
