My mother is a drug addict and an alcoholic. Her father was an alcoholic.

My father is a recovering alcoholic. His father was an alcoholic.

Am I genetically predestined to be an alcoholic?

*EDIT* I must say I do occasionally enjoy a margarita.

I read that although there are some genetic links between alcoholics it's more of an environmental thing, so there's nothing to say you have to end up that way.

My father was an alcoholic. Both my grandfathers were alcoholics. Many in the extended family are or have been alcoholics.

Your situation IS NOT unique. LOL

Many people are alcoholics but they have chosen not to drink. I have not consumed Alcoholic beverages for over 15 years. I have never looked back since I quit drinking. Alcohol is for losers.

You're not predestined, though you may be genetically predisposed. Still, many people, even those from families of addicts, can maintain control and enjoy alcohol in a healthy manner.

Mosh got it. I don't really believe in alcoholism as a "disease", but consistently being subjected to those who appear to be addicted to alcohol in your home environ, it would likely have some sort of impact on you.

before it ends up an addiction it starts out as a bad habit and from there the fall into the abyss occurs. Most never recover. Most don't have the strength of character never to start.
