Alcoholic hand gels removed from hospitals after patients use them to get drunk

The cleanser, which has been in the NHS for more than four years and is used to tackle hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA, contains 75 per cent proof alcohol, nearly twice the strength of whisky.

The gel is supposedly undrinkable thanks to the foul tasting chemical additive bitrex but paramedics who have treated patients found with the dispensers say addicts will simply "drink through" the taste.

Wow...just wow. Some drunks will go to any length to get a drink.

75 percent proof?

75 percent = 150 proof...

I also find it odd that they use ethanol in those. Usually disinfecting alcohol is isopropyl alcohol and that stuff is poisonous.

That was also my impression. If you regularly drink enough isopropynol (or methanol) to become intoxicated, you're on your way to catastrophic liver failure.

There was a guy on the show "Intervention" that was admitted to the hospital after having a bit too much alcohol. Every day. For years.
He mixed the hand sanitizer with water in a cup and drank it when his brother left.
To him, it was worth the taste. I'll never understand it (thank God).

Yup, throw a little salt in there and the alcohol seperates from the rest and you can drink it.

Edit: I've never done it though. I've never been that desperate for a drink...

I have a mental image of NSFW eating alco-gel.

I never got that desperate. I know a few people who had mouthwash problems though.
