Why did it take an amendment of the Constitution to prohibit the usage and distribution of alcohol but only laws to make marijuana, ecstacy, etc. illegal?
Prohibition wasn't necessarily going to be nationally accepted, so they passed and amendment prohibiting the use of alcohol, thereby making it a nationwide law.
Outlawing the use of drugs is done both on the state and federal level, but the federal government doesn't need to enforce the laws on the states as they abide by them voluntarily.
Alcohol, it's a lie, stimulant, a needle in your eye, lead it bleed, blow your mind, touched myself and nearly went BLIND!!!!
Not really, that's just words from Scott Weiland.

How do you think people who enjoy illicit drugs feel? Our drug laws/regulations/etc. are pretty ridiculous. How do you differentiate one drug from another? There is no good reason.
Don't even try and figure it out, it just simply boggles the mind why acohol and tobacco are legal, and cannabis isn't. There just isn't any good reason.
I mean, if they were trying to protect us from the "dangers", that could be reasonable. But the fact is, that alcohol and tobacco are far more dangerous than cannabis! That is a fact. Nobody has ever died from smoking cannabis. Infact, if you ingest cannabis (rather than smoking it), I contend that there would be no negative health effects whatsoever. It's a given that our lungs weren't designed to inhale smoke. But there is no evidence that smoking cannabis causes any major lung disease of any kind. (Linkie)
Thousands (tens of thousands?) of people die everyday as a direct result of alcohol and tobacco consumption.
Maybe they don't think they could ever make money off of cannabis if it became legal, it would be too hard to tax? I don't know. It's stupid though.
Pot does make you dumb over time though, or more specifically your memory. Sure a few times won't hurt anyone, but not if you turn it into a regular thing. So IMO it is kinda dangerous.
Alcohol destroys brain cells as well, but if you keep the consumption moderate, it only targets dying cells which is actually said to improve mental clarity. Or so they say..
Maybe they don't think they could ever make money off of cannabis if it became legal, it would be too hard to tax?
I think thats mainly it.
It does seem to make some people slower over time, but then alcohol can as well and the gov't doesn't moderate how much individuals drink or smoke, so I really think it should be legal.
Canibis is not legal for one reason, and one reason only. Assume that it was put on the ballot for referendum. How many users would acutally get out to vote? They would be to busy celebrating, assuming that everyone else was voting.
Or you would hear this phrase:
"Awww man, voting was last tuesday?!?'
If the members of congress thought they could get more votes by making it legal, it would be legal. That simple.
There is no evidence that smoking pot impairs long term brain function or long term memory. We know that it effects short term memory, so it's not a good idea to smoke a bowl before going to class. But...
Besides, it all depends on your point of view about the purpose of the drug. If you use it to just get screwed up, then that's all that's going to happen to you. But if you look at it in a mind expanding way, then you can most certainly learn things. I am quite sure my guitar playing, and just the way that i view music in general, has been influenced tremendously.
Eli, my dead beat dad is evidence that it does affect you in the long run. He used to be a pretty smart man, now he's incredibly slow at basic concepts and he can't remember anything. He once had trouble with my sisters name, he remembers no one's birthday....
I don't know if he still smokes, but I know he did for at least 10-15 years. Funny thing was, he didn't drink...but boy did he smoke. Good thing my parents got divorced when I was 5...
I sympathize with you, and I understand what you're talking about. But can you really attribute his behavior to the pot? I don't doubt that has something to do with it, but there is probably more to the story.
I don't doubt that it can have negative health effects, but they're not lethal.. Where are the bodies? lol
Of course it's not lethal, but he's in a pathetic state right now mentally. Everyone knows he has problems with memory, so they made him go to a doctor and the doctor couldn't find any diseases or anything like that. I think most people will smoke through their teens and maybe a bit into their 20s...then stop once they decide to settle down and get serious about life, so any effects aren't very noticable. But he was still smoking in his 30s...him and a friend grew a lot of the stuff. He actually broke his leg while he was "under the influence" once...driving an off-road 4-wheeler thing. I don't know if he still does it because I haven't really seen him in a year or so... i did talk to him on the phone several months ago and he was S---L----O----W...
Hehe. They tried to figure out of smoking pot impaired your ability to drive. Their conclusion? No, and it actually made the test subjects more cautious, and caused them to drive slower.
LOL..
Yeah. I guess you're right. If you do anything for years, and years.. it's going to effect you in some way.
