Albuquerque to check immigration status of criminals

It's only just begun as cities/states have had enough crime and their money drained. This is similar to AZ law but it's only if you've been arrested. And before you illegal lovers start clammoring this is for anybody arrested. No profiling found.

http://www.cabq.gov/mayor/news/mayor-ends-sanctuary-for-criminals

"This plan ends the sanctuary city policy for criminals while protecting victims and witnesses," Mayor Berry said. "By making immigration checks mandatory for everyone arrested regardless of their nationality, skin color or language, we are removing racial profiling from the equation," stated Mayor Berry. "There are still clear policies in place to prohibit racial profiling in the field. I am on record opposing racial profiling as evidenced by my vote for the anti-racial profiling law while in the legislature. This approach is not about targeting any group of people based on race. It's about targeting criminals, plain and simple. If you are a criminal, I want Albuquerque to be a bad place for you to be."
ICE officials said the agreement will allow them to do their job more effectively.

"This is not a good day for criminal aliens who before today may have not been identified by ICE at the Metropolitan Detention Center," said Alfredo Campos, acting field office director for ICE Detention and Removal Operations in El Paso. "This new partnership with the city of Albuquerque allows ICE to potentially identify criminals who conceal their true identity from law enforcement."

"Running an individual's fingerprints through ICE's Secure Communities and Criminal Alien Program gives ICE another opportunity to discover if a criminal alien is using a false name or identity," Campos said.

After meeting with city attorneys and his public safety advisors and listening to advocates' concerns about racial profiling and victims' rights, Berry decided that these new procedures, including the agreement with ICE, were the appropriate measures needed to ensure the safety of the citizens of Albuquerque.

Yes sounds like a very reasonable course of action. But if recent P&N history tells us anything, someone will come in and scream racism.

If they do, they are an idiot.
Albuquerque is doing it right by leaving no room for the profiling that makes me disagree with the Arizona state law.

Getting arrested is not same as being criminal. Innocent until proven guilty.

You lose rights when you get arrested. For example, you are taken into custody and don't have freedom of action until your bail hearing. This is a much bigger deal than having your citizenship checked...

The bigger question is why isn't every city/state doing this already? You get fingerprinted, they determine who you are or if you have any outstanding warrants, just check immigration status and turn them over to ICE after conviction. If no conviction, send them to ICE anyway.

You're not supposed to release somebody if you can't determine their identification or if they are wanted for other crimes. Being illegal is a crime. win/win.

That may be so, but the officials in the article are saying is that they are going to check immigration status of criminals, while what they are describing is checking immigration status of detained suspects. So basically they are either incompetent or dishonest.

Wow... a sensible solution. Checking the immigration status of ALL criminals, not just when you feel like it.

Unless someone can give a compelling reason not to, I support this. When you're arrested your ID is checked, your background is checked, etc. This is totally different from Arizona, where any lawful contact including filing a police report or helping the police requires them to check your immigration status.

Bullshit. Have to be detained in Arizona. You haven't read the law. Stop with your lies. Stop it. Eric holder is that you?

I would take it one step further. If the guy is an illegal, then look at his family. Ask for ID from all his family members. I bet you'll catch a bunch of illegals that way. Droves and droves of illegals, all shipped back to their country of origin. Wonderful!

We can release him with a tracking device and watch him return. Then raid the home and check ID. Perhaps he'll return to one of the immigration houses, where they have 20+ people living in a room. That's a big bounty.

What? It says straight out up top, quote: "By making immigration checks mandatory for everyone arrested..."

By the way, this is pretty much what Sheriff Joe does in Az... crime "sweeps" and determining who is illegal once people have already been arrested for something else.

Won't they catch on to the tracking devices and take them off?

lol, I guess now you kind of know how we felt when discussing the healthcare bill?

Hmm, the thing I hate the most about AZ's new immigration law is that it requires police officers to shoot mestizos on sight :awe:

Except the loony left didn't read that piece of shit either, if they had they would have seen that unlike this bill actually helping illegal immigration, it didn't do anything to improve health care.

health reform wasn't supposed to improve healthcare was it?

The US has top notch healthcare.

I like this approach to checking immigration status.

Unlike "reasonable suspicion" where anyone can be asked for papers.
