.."The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination."

Do you agree or disagree? Why?

I agree because I have more imagination than intelligence.

EDIT: Actually, "intelligence" should be replaced with "knowledge". Haha

I think his point is that anyone can memorize facts, numbers, dates, etc... But not everyone can take that information and think of new ways to use it, or new interpretations for its significance..

In that sense, its very true.

Certainly, I agree. Imagination is everything.

One of my favorite Einstein quotes is this one:

Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and the spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity. - Albert Einstein

My favorite Einstein quote which I have used many times is this one...

If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z.
X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut.

Intellect isn't the ability to memorize data, anyone can do that. It's how you USE that data, how you interpret it into new theories, how you apply it to the world, and to your life. He's absolutely right.

Slick beat me to it.

One of the best is the Theory of Relativity itself. It put the lie to Newtonian mechanical physics, was a radical departure. Like it has been noted, "only the hand that erases can write the true thing."

Indeed. Google's systems contain a great deal of knowledge, but it still can't figure out how to use it against us. At least not yet.
*click* "I'm feeling lucky."
Screen displays, in red, yellow, blue, and green text, "You shouldn't, at least not if I can have anything to do with it."

imagination and creativity are what spawn the greatest advances in human society. many people have knowledge, but far less have the creativity to advance that knowledge beyond what is understood.

academics can get too trapped within the realms of "acceptable" knowledge and spout the same tired formulas and axioms over and over. It takes imagination to challenge those axioms and change minds.

that, and what led to splitting the atom. The vast majority of physicists believed this to be impossible (and these were very intelligent people). A few thought otherwise....

Knowledge can be recorded and referenced by anyone. Imagination is the main reason we acquire that knowledge in the first place in one way or another. Almost all of the best things in life started with ideas. Call it "the source of knowledge" if you will.
