Alaskan stratovolcano on the verge of eruption

This looks interesting. Alaska has seen this type of eruption before, but the nature of this type of volcano could have some interesting results from a scientific perspective.

they typically explode and shoot ash 30,000 to 50,000 feet high - more than nine miles - into the jet stream.

It is unfortunate for the area because of the effects of the type of ash it would send into the atmosphere.

It's a very abrasive kind of rock fragment," Power said. "It's not the kind of ash that you find at the base of your wood stove."

The particulate has jagged edges and has been used as an industrial abrasive. "They use this to polish all kinds of metals," he said.

Particulate can injure skin, eyes and breathing passages. The young, the elderly and people with respiratory problems are especially susceptible. Put enough ash under a windshield wiper and it will scratch glass.

It's also potentially deadly for anyone flying in a jet. "Think of flying an airliner into a sandblaster," Power said.

I hope that if it does finally erupt that the damage is minimal, and that we get some good scientific data out of it from both a geological and climatological perspective.

I hope Obama sends about $150 million into the volcano to stop an eruption to protect the fragile environment!

When I saw the big mushroom cloud picture on the Yahoo! homepage I almost shit my pants....

I was debating for a split second which country finally did it: India, Pakistan, or NK.

I am sure the competent and intelligent Alaskan leadership will handle this well.

Probably very well. Better than LA did during Katrina.

Better yet, we can make Al Gore buy up enough carbon credits to offset the eruptions carbon footprint.

How much you want to bet. This is going to be a big blow. I mean the odds. I am 56 I never seen straight line winds until a few years ago the devastation was unreal.

Everthing seems to be happening bigger . The snow fall we got now. I am all ready thinking of the major flooding thats going to occur. No I have a feeling were in for some good times. Mans always at his best when he has to suck it in a little.

Sarah Palin to the rescue, I know for a fact that she is willing to sacrifice a one Librarian, one Alaska State Trooper, and Levi Johnston's Mom to placate the restive volcano.
