Alaska is cut off from the rest of the world

Thanks to the insane storms hitting Alaska right now (22 inches of rain in 48 hours), Alaska is having all sorts of issues. 66 miles of highway have turned into a river, isolating Valdez from everything, and the oil pipeline was shut down. You can find news stories on both of these pretty easily.

However, one thing I haven't seen any news stories about yet is that Alaska's communication lines seem to have gone to hell. I heard from a friend that the majority of the fiber optic lines that link Alaska to everything are broken at this point from the storms. I can confirm for sure that this is at least partially true. Any websites I know of hosted in Alaska (uaf.edu, uaa.edu, newsminer.com) aren't coming up at all. Beyond that, it looks like PHONES are down too. I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, and tried contacting some of my friends who still live there. Calling a landline gives me an "all circuits are busy" message no matter what, and calling a cell number doesn't do much of anything. From what I can tell, it looks like Alaska is completely disconnected from the rest of the world right now.

I'm posting this because I was wondering why I couldn't get in touch with any of my Fairbanks buddies and this seems to be why. Again, I haven't found any news stories about this anywhere, so for anyone else with friends/family in Alaska - this is what's going on if you're having problems getting in touch with them. Just a heads up 🙂

Chinese invasion!

We don't know if its the chinese yet! According to Jericho, it could be anyone! What if its the US military trying to throw a coup?!

Well some communications still work... after all, I'm here posting.

But we're having trouble communicating between our Anchorage location and our stations in Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay. We've been able to function in Anchorage well enough, but in Fairbanks they're without phone, fax, email, cell coverage... But the thing is, our two biggest telecoms are GCI and ACS. In Fairbanks, it seems GCI people can call other GCI people, and same for ACS calling ACS, but GCI people can't call ACS and vice versa.

GCI started this whole thing a few days ago when storms cut one of their cables. Then this morning, another cable was cut but I haven't learned how. What can I say, GCI sucks.

Not enough troops to spare with half the US military deployed to Iraq. 😀

It's all part of Whoozyer's plan. Don't worry about it, he'll probably buy us all a beer when he's done.

Looks like we're... I mean I'm back. Please bow to your new Alaskan overlord. My orcas (with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads) have accomplished their mission. Alaska is now, essentially, a giant raft floating south toward Hawaii. 😀

Pretty much everything north of Denali Park was cut off. I just sat down and noticed that I had a gazillion e-mails. Yay!!! Must have just flipped back on.

Edit: Grrr... 1meg cable modem running like dial up. Guess I should be happy it's running at all right now.

hehe. that's one thing that annoys me about Jericho, the people were so afraid that the chinese or the terrorists were invading KANSAS.
