Alan Wake WTH

Is it true that Alan Wake won't run on single core CPUs and will need a Quad core at 3.7GHz or more for smooth gameplay?

No, absolutely not since you basically can't buy a system like that. Do you think they would make a game that would only play on 1, maybe a few (the hardcore overclockers) systems?

It'll probably run fine on a dual core setup. From what I could tell in their presentation is that it uses one core for physics and then the other core(s) for everything else. Also, it will still almost certainly be more dependent on the GPU than the CPU so I wouldn't fret too much.

According to the creator or who ever he is he said the game runs smooth on Quad core at 3.73GHz with 7900GTX non SLI. This is for a game coming out in 2007 Jan.

He also said that 5 cores were used out of which 3 cores were to be used intensively.

He also said that it won't run on single cores except on P4 HT on which it will be crap, wordes changed and more frank than what he said.

What is he talking about?

What the dev said is that it can scale down to a HT-enabled P4 with reduced physics accuracy and effects. A dual-core cpu will probably be recommended and quad-core users will get substantial performance boosts(substantial with quad core would be anywhere from 10%-30% is my guess). The game basically has 4 threads (Level streaming, physics, sound, and everything else) .

what about single core A64 users?

Also, I don't think these games will be out for atleast another year or year and a half by other manufacturers, why the hell are these ppl going crazy then?

Awesome guess I'll wait until quad core intel chips are out before upgrading my desktop. Anyone interested in purchasing an AMD X2 4400+ that clocks up to 2.7ish GHz? Gonna be selling a DFI SLI NF4 DR board with it too.

You can always get it on 360 😀

Or for the PS3, I'm sure the super-awesome-nasa-chip in there should handle AW no problem.

The game got loads of funding and support from Microsoft and deal was that it would never ever make it on Sony Playstation 3. Anyways they had craploads of engineer working on the game.

please stick to the topic, how can they release a game which 99.9% of the world's gaming population can't afford to play.

How many percent games in the world(not only US) do they think have a X2/C2D + Radeon X1800/Geforce 7900, maybe just 1 in 100 or even less. Actaully closer to 1 in 500 I guess.

They seem absolutely crazy!

😵

Your posts never cease to amuse me.

What are YOU talking about? 5 cores? You what?

You got some kind of link to back up this hoohah?

I know the DEMONSTRATION of the the Alan Wake engine was presented on an OC'd Kentsfield but where has it been said that you NEED quad cores?

edit:

And WHAT has this got to do with video?

You don't have to have quad or even duel core to play, just like you don't need quad SLI to play today's games.

It's not like that game won't work on single core cpu's.

I'm confused though, I can tell that people really want games that take advantage of duel core cpu's, here comes a game that does exactly that and your complaining? 😕

It's quite obvious, he doesn't want to admit to himself that his 2 year-old processor is becoming mediocre... 😉 What surprised me is the fact that a decent dual-core would only set him back a $100 to $200 dollars. :frown:

the thing is the game won't run on any AMD single core CPU.
I have read from official sources.

Also, a dual core costs atleast 200$ in India, which effectively means 1600$ over here because the purchasing power capacity in India is 1:5, something which costs US citizens 1$ of their salary, it is the same as asking an Indian to pay an equivalent of 8$ of his salary which anyways is not much.

Besides I am in high school preparing for my entrance exams which are not present in USA and in India you are expected to study 5-6hrs on a school day after coming back in the afternoon. So, there is no time to work either, and I am broke. My pocket money is just Rs.1500 which equals about 35$, so in India it is a huge sum for a pocket money for a child for most atleast but in America, it is nothing. To top it I can't upgrade anything and prices in India are often much higher than USA. A 1900XT 512 costs around $500+ over here and a 7900GT too costs around 350$.

Lets see your offical sources then.

You can afford to buy an XTX but you can't afford to buy a dual core CPU? 😕

Edit: typo

I spent all my money including bday gift, earned money, pocket money, and loan from dad on this upgrade, I spent roughly 1100$ or so.

So don't play it on Ultra-High-OMGWTFBBQ Quality. There are games that can bring the latest & greatest hardware to its knees - but at the same time can be optimized to work on a generation or two old GPUs. Of course, you won't produce drool-worthy screenshots that way.

I think he is talking about this :

"Markus indicated that Alan Wake would pretty much not run on any single core processors, although it may be possible to run on single-core Pentium 4 processors with Hyper Threading enabled, with noticably reduced image quality/experience.

The game will actually spawn five independent threads: one for rendering, audio, streaming, physics and terrain tessellation. The rendering thread is the same as it would be in any game, simply preparing vertices and data to be sent to the GPU for rendering. The audio thread will obviously be used for all audio in the game, although Remedy indicates that it is far from a CPU intensive thread"

1. nobody studies 4-5 hours after school. NOBODY.

2. your in high school AND INDIA and a x1900xtx. be glad dude. i am in US, finished high school 6 months ago and still don't have such a nice card (nor would i waste money on it)

3. Quit crying. your monetary issues are insignificant. you ***** spent $1100 on a x1900xtx. thats more than my entrie system cost.

4 if you can spend on a x1900xtx then surely you can buy a nice dual core.

The reason I could go for a 1900XTX is because I didn't go for a dual core.

Also, I also upgraded my PSU Antec NeoHE 500 which costed me like 180$ or so, new RAM, new mouse.

Anyway, till now my CPU was capable of playing any game fine at 1280x1024/1600x1200 MAX with AA and AF mostly with rare exceptions, all of a sudden comes a game that says it won't run at 800x600 med or even 640x480 low is very strange.

What are you worried about, akshayt? You weren't going to be able to play this game with 1GB of RAM, anyway. So, not having a dual-core processor wasn't your only worry, as far as Alan Wake goes.
