Alabama immigration crackdown costs state up to $11 bln: study

Send the bill to the Fed gov, they're the ones that caused it by failing at their duty. Seems more than fair to me...

The lost jobs also cost Alabama up to $264.5 million in lost state sales and income taxes, and as much as $93.1 million in lost city and county sales taxes, it found.

I understand the sales tax losses, but what about income tax? Wouldn't you need to be a valid citizen to properly register your W4 when you start a job?

That doesn't even make sense.

What doesn't make sense? We hired (via taxes) a firm (Fed) who's primary responsibility is defense of the nation. We've been invaded, 2x now: The first we negotiated a truce (Amnesty via Reagan), the second invasion is still occurring.

We're still paying the firm who's failing to do what they have been hired to do. Would not you sue/demand restituion from a company who blatantly failed at what you hired, and it collected, it to do?

This isn't even a "study". This is a professor's poorly written opinion piece, at best, with just sbout every figure being presented as his own personal estimate. It's based on his preliminary "study"... In which he basically says that the law is bad and has made up his mind about what the impact is, and somebody should do a study to prove he is right (which he then proceeded to do)

Nothing but pseudo intellectual drivel, and that's about the only factual statement you'll see.

Well, its not actually in the constitution to protect Americans from visitors who stay to work illegally.

However, since I consider them to be criminal invaders then I do think the govt. needs to do something about it.

Now you've gone and spoiled it for everyone. Shame. Shame on you.

^^This^^

If somebody wants to do a valid study I would think they'd want to wait a few years to actually see how it works out. You know, the whole benefit of 'hindsight' thingy.

It probably does cost the state money because the jobs will move to states that allow illegal alien labor. This makes it even more unfortunate that the Federal Government refuses to enforce the immigration laws. I still find Liberals view on illegal immigration bizarre. The single most effective thing we could do to increase the wages of poor Americans is to stop forcing them to compete with imported third world labor.

You know what's funny.

Liberals say Apple employs slave labor because they outsourced their production to China which has a lower cost of living and thus lower wages.

However they then turn around and fawn all over illegals who are lowering wages for US workers below the costs of living or what the free market will bare in terms of filling their labor needs.

and then you guys go out and buy a apple iphones on day one that they are released.

That doesn't even make sense.

Sure it makes sense.

I setup a tent in your front yard.
In exchange for living in your yard, I cut your grass.
HOA decides tents can not be setup in yards, so I have to leave
You get made because you have to cut your own grass

This whole situation with illegal immigrants should have never happened.

No American wants the jobs that illegals take. Construction day labor in the desert of Arizona? Lawn maintenance in Florida? Picking vegetables all day long under the blazing sun?
We'd rather assemble iPhones in an air-conditioned plant. Better the 1% pays Americans than leeching billions off Americans like Apple is currently doing.

You missed the point... illegals depress wages to point of citizens not wanting or willing to do that job.... Further more, employers who employ illegals do so because there is a steady supply of those workers and the illegals complain less, etc as they work in fear of being turned in, etc.

When the Feds raided a meat packing plant in MN and found mostly illegals working there, the plant had to shut down in the short term... When it reopened it was now employing the local CITIZEN residents and paying them a higher wage.

Anyone who thinks illegals don't depress wages is full of shit... and they depress wages across entire industries.

Yep, why do manual labor, when you can kick back in low income housing and get food stamps.

The US has created a generation of entitlement. People think they are entitled to free food while someone else does all the work.

After hurricane katrina hit new orleans, I was required by my employer to go to the shelter and help out. In all, I think there were close to 200 people at the shelter - men, women and children.

Around 2 weeks after the evacuees arrived at the shelter, a bus was rented to take the people to a local workforce center to help them get a job. Some of the adults REFUSED to get on the bus. They said something like "you can not make me look for a job". The people were receiving free housing, free food, free medical checkups,,,. Why look for a job if you get everything for free?

The shelter finally got enough and closed. Some buses were brought in to bring the people to other shelters in the Houston area.

Two years after katrina, some of the people from new orleans were still living in public funded apartments.

Why should someone pick strawberries, when they can live off of government handouts?

A crack down on illegal immigrants has to go along with a crack down on welfare abuse.

Take the people that are living off the system (and able to work), and kick them off the system.

The problem is, when the lights get turned on the welfare moochers run for cover (like roaches). If one state cracks down on welfare abuse, the moochers will move to another state.

They believe in illegal imported labor, but they don't believe in exported legal labor through outsourcing and free trade agreements.

A lot of illegals use fake numbers, etc and they face state/federal income tax withholding. While you or I might file a tax return at the end of the year to get a refund, illegals usually can't do that for fear of being busted. So... the state/feds just keep all the money withheld.

I know quite a few people in the construction industry who would disagree with your opinion.

I know, which is quite stupid. At least outsourcing is actually cheaper. If someone in China works for slave wages the product actually is cheaper and the US gets a net benefit from it. With illegals immigrants, it's not actually cheaper because they are subsidized through government programs. Many of them end up sending a portion of the their income to relatives back home which is even worse economically.
