Many posting in this thread make the mistake of confusing weather with climate. The two are very different things. Oh noes its cold and winter, that has nothing to do with global warming. One is a micro-scale phenomenon while the other is macro. The effects are not necessarily reflected in the weather. It is disappointing to see people with this understanding.

Apparently you have to be intelligent when reading something like "These two research papers became the bedrock of the science of global warming, even though they offered no proof that carbon dioxide was in fact a greenhouse gas. In addition they failed to explain how this trace gas, only a tiny fraction of the atmosphere, could have any significant impact on temperatures" to understand exactly what the author is trying to do. The author is trying to cast doubt on global warming. I read an interesting article today/yesterday that compared the people denying global warming with the tobacco industry and several other industries, and the tactics they used to spread doubt in the general public.

Read that quoted sentence again - it's trying to get you to doubt that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. It's attempting to dismiss one of the most crucial aspects of global warming. As if there's only been one study that ever suggested that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. And, it's trying to appeal to people's incredulity "tiny fraction of the atmosphere."

However, for the 20th time, I'm going to ask this question of those who deny global warming:
Why was the DSCVR satellite not launched?

Let me recap the entire anti-global warming argument: "Their data was flawed! Scientific consensus is meaningless! There is no consensus! What? You have a satellite that will answer this question once and for all? NO! You can't launch it. Lalalalalalalala I'm not listening to you."

You are a science teacher, are you not? Surely you've noticed in your students that some of them simply don't get logic, math and reasoning as well as others - they simply can't make the connection that if A implies B and B implies C, and A is true, then C is true.

I mean, the OP's mind certainly doesn't think anything along the lines of what you're saying. His mindset is more like:
- Al Gore says something
- I don't like Al Gore
- Random guy says something bad about Al Gore
- ergo, whatever random guy says is right.
In this case, Al Gore could have been talking about evolution or global warming or anything at all - the actual subject doesn't matter, hence your facts and reasoning don't matter.

So how DO you get through to your students that aren't very adept at reasoning? Or do you just say 'fuck it, just repeat this stuff on the test' and wait for the next batch?

Being clean, resourceful, and respectable to the environment is pretty awesome. But not everybody enjoys the outdoors I guess.

That is a good thing, but for a bunch of knee-jerk reaction because someone goes on the national circuit preaching all about something that is threatening us, but in the end is not real, well, that's an issue. I never bought in.

The Prius is still a great idea though. :)

You mean Insight right???

apparently any insight above is lacking.

Despite having no educational or scientific credentials in meteorology, climatology, environmental science, or indeed any other scientific field or discipline, in the fall of 2007 Coleman described the current concern over global warming "a fictional, manufactured crisis, and a total scam." [3] His postings assessing the science behind global warming can be read at www.kusi.com. In fact, Coleman is not even a board-certified meteorologist or weather reader, the requirements for which are but several semester hours of successfully completed college coursework in meteorology or associated disciplines such as geology. In 2008 Coleman gave a speech of the same tone, before the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, blaming the "global warming scam" and environmentalist lobby, for rising gas and food prices. He also declared the scam "a threat to our economy and our civilization." [4]

Coleman has also made appearances on Fox News Channel and on the Showtime program, Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, to share his global warming views.

Coleman recently published an article entitled "The Amazing Story Behind the Global Warming Scam"[5] in which he promotes his personal view that many scientists and politicians have been embroiled in what amounts to scam based on incomplete science and a political motive for a world government. Coleman claims that the 'scam' was triggered by the claims of scientist Roger Revelle whose primary motivation was seeking increased funding for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

Coleman's global warming views are closely aligned with those of the International Climate Science Coalition, an organization of over 197 climate science specialists or scientists in closely related fields, who in 2008 in Manhattan N.Y., issued a declaration known as the Manhattan Declaration stating that ?Global warming? is not a global crisis [6] .

Is this the first owned thread of the year Nom for compuwiz1

Don't you know that it's called Climate Crisis now? Globing Warming is so last year.

Remember folks humans are damaging the environment and are to blame for any variations in weather. Send us your tax deductible donations now to help the fight against weather patterns.

Then send the rest to the WWF since the Polar Bears are dying because of us.

Who cares about global warming and where it comes from?

For me, the issue is sustainability. We need to be less wasteful. We need to recycle. We need to develop sustainable energy sources that don't require imports from foreign enemies.

Sometimes I think of it like this:

Back during the days of Manifest Destiny, the white man would often slaughter massive herds of buffalo, taking only their hides for sale and profit. Contrast this with the original Native American Indians who would slaughter far fewer buffalo but get a whole lot more use out of them, using every part of the animal down to the bones. When it comes to the resources of this world, the USA needs to lead the world in acting more like the latter than the former.

while i think "global warming" is real it is being used as a corprate buzzword to make money. the whole buying credits seems just wrong. Seems to many are trying to hype it for there own greed.

BUT i do agree with 2extreme21 who said "I can't see us dumping unbelievable amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere HELPING the environment-- can you? " yeah we are harming the envirment,. i just don't feel at the rate that most are claiming.

I am highly doubtful of whatever the UN puts out.

I personally think MMGW is bullshit. The extrapolation of the data that's used (OMG, HOCKEYSTICK! But wait, two different measurement areas and sources!), is farfetched and silly.

I do feel that we shouldn't shit where we eat though.

This has been the coldest winter in KY since I have been here. School out all week. Cannot get the car out of the garage. Will not be able to until Sunday. Why we have a sheet of Ice with snow on top. Then we have another layer of ice with snow on top and now it is snowing and 25 degrees. Like shoveling concrete.

GW is a scam IMO. Even the head of the weather channel said it is BS. I care more about clean water and sustainable land so we can use it for recreational purposes. Hunters and fisherman are doing more for the planet than anyone else. Cause we use it and we want to pass it along to our kids.

To endorse something that scientists that get paid to study and say is there is like trusting a russian oil conglomerate to take care of the land. Any scientist that has not agreed with the Gore Doctrine has been the victom of cut funding and ran out of the field. That says something to me. Also says something that Gore will not make any money unless the government passes legislation that would implement the science he is heavily invested in. he has a Multi BILLION dollar Fund that is tied up in might be "Green" technology.
