SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Apple hasn't said when it will release the next version of the iPhone, but former Vice President and current Apple Inc. board member Al Gore believes "new iPhones" will be here in October.

Gore spoke Wednesday at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Toby Shapshak, a summit attendee and the editor of Stuff Magazine's South African edition, told The Associated Press that, when speaking about computing's exponential growth, Gore said, "Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug."

Gore's comments, which Shapshak said he recorded on his iPhone, were reported earlier by TheNextWeb. If Gore is right, that could indicate Apple will introduce more than one model.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Uhh.. It's not a great secret that Apple's planning on holding an event on October 4 with the iPhone 5 (or whatever it'll be called) released a few weeks later.

LOL, I need to add Al Gore to my list of "official" Apple leak sources.

Several analysts were saying that the iP5 would be delayed, Gore's comment looks like a pretty well placed response to that.

Sawyer, there'll be 2 new iPhones, the 5 and the 4s, I also expect the 4 to continue to be sold.

I'm calling the 4s as going for between $325 and $400 for use on pre paid networks...

Yeah....4s is the new one. I don't expect the iPhone 5 to come out until the smoke clears after the 4s unless they drop both before Christmas to boost sales. I'm just expecting them to drag out the releases so they can cushion Q2 or Q3 of next year when the market typically lags.

A while ago, he had issues spelling "potato" and word on the street is that in part because of that, he lost the Presidential election. I wouldn't read too much into his statements.

I read his line and understood it to mean a single iPhone model. Whoever wrote that article is a bit too eager for hits.

As of right now, the iPhone 4 GSM is exactly the same as iPhone 4 CDMA. I would think they will try to do the same thing in each generation.

I guess that we'll have to wait until October 4th, unless you can get someone from the iPhone engineering team drunk and get them to leave their iPhone prototype at the bar.

Heh... I wouldn't be suprised if Engadget and Gizmodo have a standing reward policy for bartenders in Cupertino for any information they might get from drunk Apple employees 🙂

I don't think that's correct. I believe the iPhone 4 (Verizon) has a modem that is capable of CDMA and GSM, but the iPhone 4 (AT&T) is only capable of GSM connections.
